FE-Analysis of a catalytic converter during canning process and in operating state of the vehicle

Since the introduction of three-way catalytic converter in exhaust system of spark-ignition engines in Europe had started during the year of the 1980s, the mechanical and thermal loads on this system has been considerably increased. The oscillation accelerations and temperatures of this part have increased because of shifting it from the under body construction unit to the manifold. The present article from Eberspacher describes the FEM analysis of loads and safety factors of the mat material in a catalytic converter during the canning process and in the operating state of the vehicle. The mounting of the ceramic substrate in the tin can takes place, like increasingly applied today, by usage of an aluminum oxide fiber mat.

Seit Einfuhrung von Dreiwegekatalysatoren in der Abgasanlage von Ottomotoren in Europa Ende der 1980er-Jahre haben sich die mechanischen und thermischen Belastungen an diesen Systemen deutlich erhoht. Die Lagerung des Keramiksubstrats im Blechrohr erfolgt, wie heute zunehmend angewandt, mit einer Aluminiumoxidfasermatte.
