Peasant Agriculture and Global Change

With a substantial proportion of the worlds forests and croplands in the hands of peasant farmers, global planners must consider how peasants translate macroeconomic policy into environmental practice. Our study of the effect of Mexican energy development on peasant economic strategies and land-use patterns reveals that peasants are flexible and respond rapidly to macroeconomic change, shifting the balance between varied farming practices and off-farm activities in relation to changing rewards for their labor and other resources.
