Endometriosis of the cervix uteri—a common disease☆

George A. Williams

Abstract Report of 111 cases of endometriosis of the cervix occurring in a private practice demonstrates this to be a not uncommon disease. It can be diagnosed readily at the time of the onset of the menstrual flow or shortly thereafter. Technique of biopsy involving minimal trauma, the use of sharp instruments, and careful handling of the specimen is described. An extremely high incidence of 83 per cent decidual reaction in the cervix of patients who subsequently became pregnant suggests a causal relationship which may be the subject of further study. Endometriosis of the cervix is a trivial disease but it may produce symptoms which not only are annoying but are alarming to the patient. Trauma, either obstetric or operative, especially cauterization, is probably an etiological factor. The lesions are easily treated by excision, cauterization, or fulguration.

Topical androgenic hormones in vulvar kraurosis-leukoplakia syndrome; preliminary report.

A.Cullen Richardson; George A. Williams

Abstract A preliminary report is made on 25 patients with kraurosis and/or leukoplakia of the vulva treated primarily with topical testosterone propionate in a petrolatum base. Satisfactory symptomatic relief was obtained in all cases and has been maintained with continuous therapy. Exacerbation following omission of therapy has been the rule. A discussion of the possible mode of action of topical testosterone is included.

Office aspiration curettage of the endometrium

Earl W. Hathcock; George A. Williams; Sam M. Engelhardt; Alda L. Murphy

Abstract A review of 1,784 aspiration curettages of the endometrium in the office is presented. Thirty-eight adenocarcinomas of the endometrium were found and either adenomatous hyperplasia or atypical adenomatous hyperplasia was discovered in 105 cases. A malignant or premalignant condition was found in 9.2 per cent and diagnostic accuracy, as judged by long-term follow-up, was very good. Insufficient material for diagnosis was only rarely encountered and did not present diagnostic difficulty. This procedure is highly recommended for office evaluation of the endometrium.
