The Future of Microwave Heating Equipment in the Food Industries

George Freedman

ABSTRACTThe application of microwave electronics to heating systems in the food industries represents the use of high technology products in low technology industries. This peculiar mismatch can lead to many difficulties in arriving at mutually satisfying microwave applications. The hostile environment for sophisticated electronics frequently encountered in food plants; the lack of sophisticated knowledge of processing costs; the need to design equipment for use by nontechnically oriented plant people, are only a few of the problems the microwave hardware manufacturer must face in creating an economically significant business within the food industry. However, the opportunities appear to be there to make the risk worth it.

The Future of Microwave Power in Industria! Applications*

George Freedman

ABSTRACTWhile microwave energy equipment may well involve substantial capital investment and running expense increases over more conventional heat transfer equipments, the advantages in resulting flatter temperature profiles in the work, in speed, in efficiency, in quenchability and focusability can overcome these disadvantages dramatically depending on the application. These tradeoffs are studied quantitatively to result in an optimistic prognosis for this business.

Laminate Reinforced Dental Amalgam

E. Albert Petersen; George Freedman

The flexural strength of amalgam specimens was increased significantly by the application of ductile metal laminates in regions that are subjected to tensile forces and perpendicular to the direction of the applied force. Laminates were silver-tin alloy, pure gold, pure silver, and silver-plated stainless steel. The embedded stainless steel laminate in a thickness of 0.0015 inches was the most effective. Substantial strengthening also was noted with an embedded stainless steel laminate in a Class II restoration of a typodont tooth.
