Mathematical modelling of column base plate connections

John Ch. Ermopoulos; George N. Stamatopoulos

Abstract Based on classical methods a design procedure is proposed for the derivation of M-ϕ curves of column base connections. Besides, a new simple formula is also proposed, which describes with adequate accuracy the relation between moment and rotation, and all the necessary coefficients of this formula are given for each particular case. Introducing this formula into equilibrium equations of any frame and using the appropriate M-ϕ curves, a more accurate analysis of the frames can be carried out, with a better approximation for the support conditions, regarding the assumption of fully pinned or fixed supports.

Analytical modelling of column-base plates under cyclic loading

J.Ch. Ermopoulos; George N. Stamatopoulos

Abstract An analytical model in a closed form for the determination of the response of exposed type column-bases under cyclic loading is proposed. Verification of this model with some existing experimental results seems to be satisfactory. Introduction of this model into equilibrium equations of the whole structure leads to a better estimation of the distribution of internal forces, taking into account the column-base semi-rigidity.

Interaction curves for column base-plate connections

George N. Stamatopoulos; J.Ch. Ermopoulos

Abstract In the present paper, the ultimate behaviour of column base-plate connections is studied and the corresponding interaction M-P curves are obtained, taking into account the main parameters of the problem. The proposed methodology is based on the consideration of three failure modes according to the level of bearing stresses. The parameters considered are the size and thickness of the plate, the size, length and location of the anchor bolts, the quality of materials and the amount of applied axial load on the column. Finally, the typical procedure that is needed in order to analyse a structure taking into account the influence of the semi-rigidity of the support connection is summarised in a step by step form.
