Common trends in particle and condensed matter physics: Proceedings of Les Houches Winter Advanced Study Institute, February 1980

Abstract This issue contains the contributions to the 1980 Les Houches Institute on Common Trends in Particle and Condensed Matter Physics. They combine pedagogical lectures and more specialized seminars. Grouped according to different mainlines they cover a rapidly developing field with many topics of common interest to particle physicists and condensed matter physicists.

Hier wird aufgezeigt wie hierarschiche Strukturen fur eine Versammlung von Individuen, von einem variationellen Prinzip abgeleitet werden konnen, das heisst das Prinzip der geringeren Schwierigkeit. Einige Konsequenzen dieses Prinzips werden erforscht und durch Beispiele belegt. Analogien mit verschiedenen physikalischen Theorien werden unterstrichen.

ETHICS ENTERS THE 21ST CENTURY

When the great and the good met at the World Conference on Science in Budapest in June, one question was on many peoples lips. How much has science changed since the previous World Conference held in Vienna 20 years before? One major development has been, of course, the collapse of science in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union following the fall of communism. Less spectacular, but equally significant, has been the rising influence of the Third World Academy of Sciences, which was set up in 1983 in Trieste in Italy.
