Response Time Analysis of Messages in Controller Area Network: A Review

Gerardine Immaculate Mary; Zachariah C. Alex; Lawrence Jenkins

This paper reviews the research work done on the response time analysis of messages in controller area network (CAN) from the time CAN specification was submitted for standardization (1990) and became a standard (1993) up to the present (2012). Such research includes the worst-case response time analysis which is deterministic and probabilistic response time analysis which is stochastic. A detailed view on both types of analyses is presented here. In addition to these analyses, there has been research on statistical analysis of controller area network message response times.

Time analysis of wireless controller area network-based fire and gas safety system

Gerardine Immaculate Mary; Zachariah C. Alex; Lawrence Jenkins

Fire and gas safety FGS system are important tools for safeguarding process plants and production facilities that handle flammable and toxic materials. In general, a conventional fire and gas system has several shortcomings, such as weakness to noise and false alarms. In order to overcome these shortcomings, controller area network CAN-based FGS system has been implemented in our previous work. Further, considering that FGS systems are employed in hazardous environments, where wireless implementation of CAN is desirous, an attempt to make CAN wireless is carried out for these systems in this work, by using the radio protocol IEEE 802.15.4 to communicate CAN messages wireless. This work is a continuation of our previous work. Here the wired CAN interface is converted to wireless CAN and response time analysis of the system is done using CANoe v7.6.

Autonomous ball grabber robot

Jandhyala Yasaswy; Akshay Sachdeva; Gerardine Immaculate Mary

The purpose of this project is to achieve a system which is autonomous in nature and also meet the needs and demands of professional sports such as tennis, cricket, baseball or any other sport which involve the use of balls. It is a common notion that when time and money are essence of any activity then professionals do not generally prefer to pick up hundreds of balls after a long day of practise. As a result, our solution is a ball-picker device that is easy to use and cost effective. This device is used for picking up one ball at a time. This device is tailor made to be used for different sporting events other than tennis or baseball which involve balls of similar size and weight. We have used ATMEGA32 microcontroller, L293D dual motor driver board and IR LEDs and photodiodes to achieve our objective. The objective is to use infrared rays as a means to drive the robot as well as avoid obstacles on its path. By suitable arrangement of the pair of IR LEDs and photodiodes the entire system can be realized.

Performance analysis of controller area network based safety system in an electric vehicle

Manoj Rohit Yemparala; Shikhara Yerabati; Gerardine Immaculate Mary

The aspects of energy conservation and environmental protection are the need of the hour. Hence, the battery electric vehicles came into existence and are operated for various purposes. The most important part of these vehicles is the safety systems. The operation of the safety systems installed in Pedal Assembly, Dash Board, Battery pack, Motor Controller can be made less complicated and faster by using Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. Keeping design simplicity in mind CAN protocol is used to make the system less bulky by reducing the number of wiring. In this paper, we see how the Electric Vehicle runs by using this protocol in accordance with the FSAE standards. The main motive of the paper is to improve the safety and reliability of the vehicle which is achieved by the application of the CAN transmission protocol.

Automated energy meter using WiFi enabled raspberry Pi

P Arun Chandra; G Mohith Vamsi; Y Sri Manoj; Gerardine Immaculate Mary

India is presently witnessing substantial rise in investments especially industrial and infrastructural areas. This growth is further being augmented by the increase in power generation capacity and reliable power distribution and measurement network. In some developed countries like the United States smart meters are already deployed. Although some companies have introduced smart meters, many households have conventional meters. This provides a chance for companies as well as engineers to develop innovative metering solutions. The proposed system can be incorporated to the installed energy meters without much effort. It consists of a light sensor module which detects the pulses given out by the meter and the python program developed computes the energy consumed by the load and sends these values monthly to the Google spreadsheets via Drive API. The users can access the information on a webpage as well as an Android App. In addition to this, they also receive an SMS with the help of a GSM module interfaced to the Raspberry Pi.

Embedded System for Cash Deposit in ATM

Prashant Roy; Pagariya Darshan P; Gerardine Immaculate Mary

In this paper, an Embedded System for Cash Deposit at ATM machine has been proposed. ATMs available nowadays facilitate services like cash withdrawal, transaction details, account balance, card to card money transfer. The proposed system will be installed in the ATM machines already available and will enable customers to deposit money into their account without going to bank. This system consists of currency Recognizer and Currency Counter and User interface. This system will facilitate customers to deposit cash at ATM available in their locality.

UWB indoor channel profile identification with orthogonal Hermite pulses

G. Pradeep Reddy; Gerardine Immaculate Mary

Prior to transmission, the best receiver position for optimum signal reception from the transmitter is preferred. Unfortunately due to multipath, finding the best receiver position and identifying the channels in indoor environment are very difficult. This paper proposes a low complexity parameter to overcome this problem. Also, advantage is taken of the UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) physical layer, which has multipath resolution capacity. Simulation and measurement results are compared and shown as proof of concept that precise channel profiles between different LOS and NLOS conditions can be identified with this combined strategy. Also UWB communication system is realized by modelling UWB signal as Hermite pulses and convolving them with the IEEE 802.15.3a channel models for LOS and different NLOS conditions, namely CM1, CM2, CM3 and CM4, using modified Saleh-Valenzuela (S-V) model.
