Catalytic Conversions in Water. Part 21: Mechanistic Investigations on the Palladium‐Catalysed Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols in Water†

Gerd-Jan ten Brink; Isabel W. C. E. Arends; Roger A. Sheldon

Water-soluble complexes of palladium(II) with phenanthroline-derivatives are stable, recyclable catalysts for the selective aerobic oxidation of a wide range of alcohols to aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids in a biphasic liquid-liquid system. The active catalyst is a dihydroxy-bridged palladium dimer. Kinetics of the reaction, ligand and anion effects are discussed.

Selenium catalysed oxidations with aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Part 3: Oxidation of carbonyl compounds under mono/bi/triphasic conditions

Gerd-Jan ten Brink; J.Martijn Vis; Isabel W. C. E. Arends; Roger A. Sheldon

The total synthesis of 3,5-bis(perfluorooctyl)phenyl butylselenide (1), a recyclable catalyst for oxidation reactions with hydrogen peroxide, is described. The catalyst can be used for oxidation of aldehydes and ketones under monophasic, but also fluorous biphasic or fluorous triphasic conditions.

Catalytic conversions in water: Part 13. Aerobic oxidation of olefins to methyl ketones catalysed by a water-soluble palladium complex – mechanistic investigations

Gerd-Jan ten Brink; Isabel W. C. E. Arends; Georgios Papadogianakis; Roger A. Sheldon

Abstract Water-soluble palladium(II) bathophenanthroline is a stable, recyclable catalyst for the selective aerobic oxidation of terminal olefins to the corresponding 2-alkanones in a biphasic liquid–liquid system. Kinetic measurements indicate that the active catalyst is a homogeneous mononuclear species.

Catalytic conversions in water. Part 10.† Aerobic oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones catalysed by water soluble palladium complexes

Gerd-Jan ten Brink; Isabel W. C. E. Arends; Georgios Papadogianakis; Roger A. Sheldon

Water soluble palladium(II) complexes of bidentate diamine ligands, such as bathophenanthroline disulfonate, are stable, recyclable catalysts for the selective aerobic oxidation of terminal olefins to the corresponding alkan-2-ones in a biphasic liquid–liquid system.
