We demonstrate the transmission of 28 Gb/s NRZ-OOK over DCF-free links up to 10 km using a monolithic VCSEL, direct detection and an MLSE-based receiver for low-cost, short-reach interconnects. DSP complexity is also investigated in terms of performance optimization.

We propose an engineering method for OSNR penalty estimation for non-linear transmission of 112Gb/s PDM-DQPSK WDM signals over uncompensated links incorporating WSSes. Simulations and experimental results validate the method.

Non-coherent single wavelength 56Gbps 640km transmission over DCF-free SSMF link by using direct-detection DMT

Single wavelength 56Gbps transmission in 640km dispersion-unmanaged link is successfully realized by using direct-detection discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation method. A single polarization IQ modulator is used to do chromatic dispersion pre-compensation and generate single sideband (SSB) DMT signal. Just one PIN is used to detect the received signal to reduce the cost. More than 3000ps/nm chromatic dispersion tolerance is achieved in 320km link.

Low complexity, single-stage frequency-domain equalization supported by blind CD estimation and training-aided 2×2 MIMO channel estimation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a 32 GBaud Nyquist PDM-QPSK transmission system.

Transmission of intensity modulation-direct detection signals far beyond the dispersion limit enabled by phase-retrieval

We propose a novel method to compensate for chromatic dispersion induced intersymbol interference in high baud-rate intensity-modulated direct-detection systems. A standard 40Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero on-off keying channel is recovered successfully after 90km of standard single-mode fibre.

Accurate prediction of signal quality is presented based on an extended semi-analytical model for coherent detection optical channels after nonlinear transmission over heterogeneous uncompensated links with consideration of modulation formats, channel count, and routing.

We show how the nonlinear performance of reconfigurable WDM systems over non-dispersion-managed links can be accurately estimated using two-dimensional look-up-tables. Experimental validation is reported for 43Gb/s DP-QPSK and 45Gb/s DP-BPSK WDM systems.
