Enhanced Optical Transport Network standards

The continued exponential growth of packet based network traffic has necessitated the upgrading of the networking infrastructure that operates at the data line rates of 40/100 Gbs. Multimedia services, such as high-definition video, online gaming, distance learning, social networking phenomenon and need to transfer large scale data across the globe are some of the drivers. Standards organizations such as ITU-T, IEEE, OIF, IETF have developed various standards and recommendations for 40/100 Gb/s data rates. This paper highlights the enhancements made to the ITU-Ts G.709, Optical Transport Network (OTN) standard.
