This research was developed to evaluate the potential use of the woods Schizolobium amazonicum (Parica) and Cecropia hololeuca (Embauba) for manufacturing particleboard. Were made panels with the densities of 0.70 g/cm³, using mixtures of urea-formaldehyde resin and wood particles of Parica and Embauba, in proportions of 75, 50 and 25%. The Pinus taeda wood was used as the reference. The panels were pressed at the temperature of 160oC, pressure of 40 kgf/cm², for 8 minutes. The evaluations of the properties of water absorption, thickness swelling, internal bond, modulus of elasticity and modulus of ruptures, showed that the woods of Schizolobium amazonicum (Parica) e Cecropia hololeuca (Embauba) are technically feasible for particleboard manufacture.

Wood sector is characterized by a great source of waste generation. This way, the effective control of the productive activities is an essential condition for any company to compete in the market. The objective of the study was to evaluate the yield of raw material in percentage and financial terms of a clear blocks industry, in order to define the best variables for supplier, size and edger. The method involved the selection of variables of interest, edgers (up-down and down-up cuts), size (67 mm and 92 mm) and supplier (internal and external); the determination of the total percent yield and quality grade through the material balance and the financial means of the cost of raw materials, production costs and selling price. The analysis was performed by multifactorial analysis of variance and Tukeys test. The yield of raw materials in percentage terms found in the study demonstrated the superiority of the size 92 mm front and 67 mm, because of the increased use of parts. Concerning to the supplier, it was observed a better performance of the sternum against internal due to the quality of the wood, however, in financial terms, this situation was reversed due to the lower cost of raw material for domestic supplier. To the form of processing in the edger, unverified statistical difference between the two court systems.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of heat treatment on soybean oil with some physical properties of Pinus sp wood, being evaluated the dimensional variation, density, warping and cracking in samples with 5 mm and 20 mm thicknesses. The samples were submitted to heat treatment at a temperature of 80 °C to 160 °C, for 20 and 40 minutes, with and without subsequent immersion in cold oil. Comparisons were made with control samples, to 12% moisture content. The results demonstrated that the factors of greater effect of the thermal treatment with soybean oil on the properties were: high-temperature heat treatment (160 °C); lower initial thickness (5 mm); longer treatment (40 minutes) and immersion in cold oil after the heat treatment. The effects of the heat treatment associated with immersion in cold oil resulted in lower shrinkage and warp and in the increase in density values.

This study aimed to assess the technical feasibility of using five Eucalyptus species to manufacture Oriented Strand Boards. The species studied were: Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus dunni, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus urograndis the mixture between them and the Pinus taeda as control. The panels composed by a mix of species showed dimensional stability similar to others produced with Eucalyptus pure species. The panels of Eucalyptus had lower water absorption and thickness swelling values to the controls panels. In static bending, the MOR values did not show statistics differences between treatments, however, for MOE the Eucalyptus panels showed statistically higher values when compared to control specie. In internal bond, the panels produced with Pinus taeda showed higher average value than the other species. All species as well as the mixture showed technical feasibility for the production of Oriented Strand Board.

Studies on the potential use of alternative fast growing species are of great importance, in order to increase the supply of raw material for forest based industries, especially for particleboard factories. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of use of the Grevillea robusta in mixture with Pinus taeda for the particleboards production, as well as, to establish the maximum amount of incorporation of this species in the industrial process. The panels were produced with the species without mixtures and in different proportions of the replacement of the Pinus by Grevillea wood, with a nominal density of 0.70 g/cm3 and urea-formaldehyde resin (8%). The results showed that treatment with 20% Grevillea robusta and 80% of Pinus taeda meet the minimum requirements of the mechanical properties according to EN 312 (and a control) and the maximum replacement of Pinus by Grevillea robusta wood is 26%.

This study was developed to evaluate the effects of different compositions of plywood of Pinus maximinoi, Pinus oocarpa e Pinus tecunumannii. Were manufactured in laboratory plywood composed by seven veneer with 3,0 mm thickness, with standard composition, longitudinal reinforced composition and transversal reinforced composition. Were used for veneer gluing the phenol- formaldehyde resin with the following formulation in parts of weight: resin = 100, extender = 10 and water = 10. The amount of glue spread was 160 g/m² (one side layer). The boards were pressed at temperature of 150oC, specific pressure of 15 kgf/ cm² and press time of 15 minutes. Were realized static bending tests in the parallel and cross direction. The boards of Pinus maximinoi showed better results in MOE and MOR, parallel and cross direction in comparison to boards of Pinus oocarpa and Pinus tecunumannii. The boards made from three species showed satisfactory results of MOE and MOR, parallel and cross direction, in comparison to commercial plywood of Pinus taeda. The veneer reinforced in to parallel and cross direction not influenced significantly in the results of MOE and MOR parallel direction. The longitudinal veneer reinforced plywood affects poorly the results of MOE and MOR in the cross direction.
