Densification Behavior of Metal Powder Under Cold Compaction

Seong-Cheol Lee; Gi-Tae Kim

Densification behavior of ceramic powder under cold compaction was investigated. Experimental data were obtained for zirconia powder and alumina powder under triaxial compression with various loading conditions. A special form of the Cap model was proposed from experimental data under triaxial compression for a yield function of ceramic powder. The proposed yield function was inplemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to study densification behaviors of zirconia and alumina powders under die compaction. The effect of friction between the powder and die wall was also investigated. Density distributions of powder compacts were measured and compared with finite element results.

Near-Net-Shape Forming and Finite Element Analysis for Ceramic Powder Under Cold Combination Pressing and Pressureless Sintering

Hong-Gi Kim; Hyeong-Man Lee; Gi-Tae Kim

Near-net-shape forming of zirconia powder was investigated under the combination of cold die and isostatic pressing and pressureless sintering. A novel combination pressing technique, i.e., die com paction under cold isostatic pressing, allowed to produce a complex shaped ceramic powder compact with the controlled dimensions and relatively uniform density distributions. The constitutive models proposed by Kim and co-workers for densification of ceramic powder under cold compaction and high temperature were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Experimental data for relative density distributions and deformations of zirconia powder compacts produced by cold combination pressing and pressureless sintering were compared with finite element results. Finite element results agreed well with experimental data.

Effect of rubber mold on densification behavior of metal powder during cold isostatic pressing

Jin-Won Jeong; Gi-Tae Kim

The effect of rubber mold on densification behavior of pure iron powder was investigated under cold isostatic pressing. The thickness effect of rubber mold was also studied. The elastoplastic constitutive equation based on the yield function of Shima and Oyane was implemented into the finite element program(ABAQUS) to predict compaction responses of metal powder under cold isostatic pressing. The hyperelastic constitutive equation based on Moony-Rivlin and Ogden strain energy potentials was also employed to analyze deformation of rubber mold. The coefficients of the strain energy potentials were obtained from tension and volumetric compression data of rubber. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for densification of pure iron powder under cold isostatic pressing.

Yeong-Sam Gwon; Hui-Tae Lee; Gi-Tae Kim

Densification behavior of 316L stainless steel power under die pressing was studied. The efects of friction between the powder and die wall under different die pressing modes were also investigated. The elastoplastic constitutive equations based on the yield functions of Fleck-Gurson and of Shima and Oyane were implemented into finite element program(ABAQUS) to simulate die compaction processes. The finite element results were compared with experimental data for 316L stainless steel powder under die pressing.

The Effect of Hot Isostatic Pressing on Mechanical Properties of Cast Aluminum Alloy

Gi-Tae Kim; Hun-Cheol Yang; Jae-Yun Choe

The present paper investigates the effect of hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) on mechanical properties, e.g., tensile strength, ductility and impact absorption energy of sand and die casted aluminum alloys. After HIPing at various temperatures and pressure conditions, uniaxial tensile test and Izod impact test of the samples were carried out. The experimental results showed improvements in uniaxial tensile strength, elongation and Izod impact toughness of sand casted aluminum alloy, while deterioration of a tensile strength fur die casted aluminum alloy. The effect of HIPing for microstructure of the cast aluminum alloy was also investigated.

Densification Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Powder Compacts at Room and High Temperatures

Seung-Taek Hong; Gi-Tae Kim; Hun-Cheol Yang

Viscoplastic response and densification behaviors of Ti-6AI-4V powder compacts under uniaxial compression are studied at room and high temperatures with various initial relative densities and strain rates. The yield function and strain-hardening law proposed by Kim and co-workers were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare experimental data with finite element calculations for porous Ti6A14V powder compacts. Displacement-relative density, displacement-load relations and deformed geometry of Ti-A14V powder compacts were compared with finite element results. Density distributions in Ti-6AI-4V powder compacts were also measured and compared with finite element results.

Analysis for Residual Twisting Moment in a Steel Cord during Twisting Wires

Gyu-Nam Lee; Hyeong-Man Lee; Gi-Tae Kim

The effects of various factors were studied on the process of a steel cord by twisting wires. To remove residual twisting moment after the steel cord process, the twisting angles of residual elasti c twisting and overtwisting were measured and compared with finite element results. The agreement between experimental data and finite element calculations was good for the angles of residual elastic twisting and over-twisting. The stress distributions in a steel cord under complex loading conditions were also obtained by using the finite element analysis.

Effect of Ceramic Ball Inclusion on Densification of Metal Powder Compact

Hwan Park; Yo-Han Yu; Gi-Tae Kim

The effect of a ceramic ball inclusion on densification behavior of a metal powder compact was investigated under cold isostatic pressing, pressureless sintering and hot isostatic pressing. To simulate those processes, proper constitutive models were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Measured density distributions of metal powder compacts were also compared with finite element results and showed the same trend with simulated results. Residual stress distributions were calculated by finite element analysis to study the effect of ceramic ball inclusions with different thermal expansion coefficients. The higher residual stress was observed in a metal powder compact when the difference between thermal expansion coefficients for a ceramic ball and metal powder became larger. Samples produced by Wing showed more uniform density distributions and lower residual stresses compared to those by sintering after cold isostatic pressing. For various sizes of ceramic ball inclusions, densification and deformation of powder compacts were also studied during hot isostatic pressing.

Optimal Shape Design of a Container Under Hot Isostatic Pressing by a Finite Element Method

Seok-Hwan Jeong; Hwan Park; Gyeong-Dal Jeon; Gi-Tae Kim; Sang-Mu Hwang

Near net shape forming of 316L stainless steel powder was investigated under hot isostatic pressing. To simulate densification and deformation of a powder compact in a container during hot isostatic pressing, the constitutive model of Abouaf and co-workers was implemented into a finite element analysis. An optimal design technique based on the design sensitivity was applied to the container design during hot isostatic pressing. The optimal shape of the container was predicted from the desired final shape of a powder compact by iterative calculations. Experimental data of 316L stainless steel powder showed that the optimally designed container allowed precise forming of the desired powder compact during hot isostatic pressing.

Densification Behavior of Titanium Alloy Powder Under Hot Pressing

Hun-Cheol Yang; Gi-Tae Kim

Densification behavior of titanium alloy powder was investigated under hot pressing at various pressures and temperatures. Experimental date were obtained for densification of titanium alloy powder under an instantaneous loading and subsequent creep deformation during hot pressing. The constitutive models of Fleck et al. and the modified Gurson were employed for thermo-phastic deformation under the instantaneous loading and that f Abouaf and co-workers for creep deformation of titanium alloy powder during hot pressing. By implementing these constitutive equations into a finite element program(ABAQUS), finite element results were compared with experimental data during hot pressing. To investigate the effect of friction between the power and die wall, density distributions of power compacts were measured and compared with finite element calculations. Finite element results from the models of Fleck et al. and the modified Gurson agreed reasonably good with experimental data for densification and density distribution of titanium alloy powder under the instantaneous loading during hot pressing. Finite element results from the model of Abouaf and co-workers, however, somewhat overestimate experimental data for creep deformation of power compacts during hot pressing.
