Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) is a widely employed model for SC performance assessment, regardless its generic nature. This article presents a SCOR-based model for performance measurement in supply chains (SC) and apply it in the context of Brazilian footwear industry. The model has two dimensions: SCOR processes (source, make, deliver and return) and performance standards adapted from original SCOR (cost, quality, delivery and flexibility). This structure delivers a 4 × 4 matrix, with each component assessed under analytical hierarchy process. Using focus groups, SC’s experts weighted each component of the matrix regarding their relevance. Thereafter, SC’s managers indicated respective results. The SC’s overall performance was obtained by adding the performance of all indicators. The model application embraced one focal footwear manufacturer, four suppliers, three distribution channels and a return channel, with 85 indicators assessed. The achieved performance for the whole SC is 75.29%.The main gaps were found in deliver process (12.78 percentual points of difference between relevance and achieved proportions) and in flexibility performance (9.82). Further application is recommended in order to find consolidated results.

Abstracts: This paper presents and tests a method for building models to measure environmental performance in manufacturing operations. The research method was the multiple case study. Environmental performance of a manufacturing operation was treated as an intangible variant, composed of five latent constructs: atmospheric emissions, liquid effluents, solid waste, natural resources employment and management and legal requirements and certification compliances. The first four have direct impact on the environment and the last is accepted as a priority and necessary condition for the others. The meaning of the constructs was appraised by indicators and assessed by questionnaires answered by managers from five operations: chicken egg production, mechanical manufacture, electrical goods manufacture, animal food manufacture and steel stamping. The results were discussed and compared, providing some indicators for an eventual reformulation of environmental strategies of the enterprises studied, to be adopted within the enterprises operational strategies.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to propose a method for assessing the service recovery performance of a manufacturing company with value‐added services. Service recovery performance is assessed by an index with value ranges from 0 to 100 percent.Design/methodology/approach – A tree‐like structure was built to represent service recovery. This structure was weighted according to the degrees of each dimensions relative importance using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. After construction, the dimensions were evaluated by considering how much they were applied during the process; the service recovery index and the gaps between importance and application were determined. The method was tested in a multinational manufacturing company and in two buyer companies.Findings – It was possible to identify the most important service recovery dimensions from the perspective of a manufacturing company (“speed of recovery”, followed by “empowerment”) and the respective degree of application according to the...

This paper presents a method for assessing environmental performance in industrial operations. The method was applied to three logistical operations in an industrial supply chain performed by a single operator: road transportation, warehousing, and urban transportation. Environmental performance was treated as a complex object and was structured according to the following five criteria: atmospheric emissions, liquid effluents, solid waste, natural and energy resources, and managerial and legal regulations. The first four criteria address a direct impact on the environment, whereas the last is a necessary condition for the first four to have a satisfactory performance. Six experts in environmental management prioritized the criteria and defined sets of indicators for the field appraisal. The indicators were expected to be correlated for the same criteria. The validity of the indicators was assessed through questionnaires answered by six managers of the operation. Finally, three overall indices corresponding to the environmental performance of the three logistical operations were calculated for the operations and were found to be 73.58, 79.21, and 76.28% (higher is better). These indicate good results because the maximum performance is expected to be 100%. This environmental performance assessment can aid in reformulating the environmental strategies embedded in the operational strategy of the company.

This paper presents a case study discussing the introduction of ecodesign techniques in a company of the electronic automotive industry. The paper begins by reviewing environmental sustainability, industrial ecology, ecodesign and life cycle analysis. The report contains some environmentally accepted practices in the automotive industry and concludes with the process of implantation and establishment of design policies and with a preliminary assessment of the results so far yielded.

This paper proposes a multicriterial framework for strategic performance assessment, beginning with a presentation of concepts of performance measurement, and a description of management models based on the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award and lean thinking. A method is then outlined for building a flexible framework for performance assessment and a case study is described: an evaluation of the performance of aspects of lean thinking in an urban passenger transportation operation. The paper concludes with a discussion of the findings of the case study using the proposed method, comparing it with the evaluation method currently used by two companies in the sector under study.

Purpose – This article aims to adopt a complementary line of reasoning by investigating the problems that manufacturers can face when providing services in different countries. Studies of the relationship between products and services have focused on concept, model and classification propositions; the importance of building relationships with clients; and approaches for bundling services and products. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative, multi-case research design was employed. The authors aim was to study similar services provided by the same company in different countries. The authors investigated the six most important service units of a company that sells 1.2 billion/year. This approach differs from the majority of the previous studies conducted at the global level (multiple case studies and/or distinct business sectors). Findings – The provision of service in different countries may face some challenges in the capital goods industry. Such challenges arise from the following elements: regulati...

– Outsourcing-based performance practices establish goals for supplier performance and compensation. The management of contracts based on performance is complex as is the alignment of long-term relationship and indicators. The purpose of this research is to analyse the practices that contracting companies utilise to manage outsourcing contracts with performance-based compensation. , – Multiple case studies were conducted with five contracting companies. Nine performance-based outsourcing contracts were analysed. , – The selection and evaluation processes have been neglected by the buyers associated with contracts that are over ten years old. The process of transferring activities relied on the knowledge of employees. Management practices based on indicators and the adoption of results-based compensation are commonplace in a number of contracts and are consistent with theory. , – This paper identifies management practices that differ between what is expected from the theoretical framework and what is observed in the actual examined contracts. Opportunities for improvement have been identified mainly in the areas of supplier selection and activity transfer; the use of pilot tests and the reengineering of the outsourced processes are suggested.

Abstract The paper presents an analysis of the changes observed in competitive factors in the footwear industry aimed at the Brazilian-based export industry, due to the arrival of Asian producers, the Chinese in particular, in the market. The research method was a qualitative exploratory case study. The main research techniques were semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Managers, experts and academics involved in the companies participated. As a result, we discovered that the impact of these new producers has been to sharpen the following competitive dimensions: diversity of models, quality, innovation, speed of delivery and flexibility. The dimensions of volume and price declined in importance. The dimensions of design, performance and reliability of delivery remain unchanged. The paper’s main contribution is to postulate a research hypothesis to be tested in a future survey dealing with competitive dimensions in the industry. Keywords Footwear industry. Production strategy. Clusters. Supply chain. Competitiveness.
