Astragalus kamarinensis (Fabaceae), a New Species from Sicily

Cristian Brullo; Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo; Pietro Minissale; Saverio Sciandrello

Astragalus kamarinensis C. Brullo, Brullo, Giusso, Miniss. & Sciandr. sp. nova (Fabaceae) is described and illustrated from Sicily. It grows exclusively on sandy soils, near the ruins of Kamarina, located in the southern part of Sicily. Morphologically, it shows close relationships with A. Stella, A. raphaelis and A. tribuloides, all belonging to A. sect. Sesamei. Several morphological features, chiefly regarding the flowers, legumes and seeds, as well as the micromorphology of the pod indumentum and seed coat, allow to well distinguish this species from the other taxa in the section. A phenetic analysis based on the morphological characters supports our taxonomic conclusions.

A New Autumn-Flowering Species of Allium (Alliaceae) from Croatia

Sandro Bogdanović; Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo; Cristina Salmeri

Here we describe Allium telmatum Bogdanović, Brullo, Giusso & Salmeri, a new species of Allium sect. Codonoprasum from North Dalmatia (Croatia). Its chromosome number (2n = 32), karyotype, leaf anatomy, ecology and taxonomical relationships are examined. Several features, such as phenology (flowering in autumn), occurrence in coastal salt marshes, tetraploid chromosome number, and morphology, indicate that it is most closely related to the Tyrrhenian species Allium savii. On the basis of our herbarium survey, we present here a distribution map of the autumn-flowering species of Allium sect. Codonoprasum in the Mediterranean area.

Brullo, C., Brullo, S., Giusso del Galdo, G., Ilardi, V. & Sciandrello, S. 2012. A new species of Silene sect. Dipterosperma (Caryophyllaceae) from Sicily. Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 69(2): 209-216. Silene kemoniana, a new species of the section Dipterosperma from NW Sicily, is described and illustrated. It is a therophyte that occurs in mountains near Palermo, where it grows on Mesozoic limestones in xerophilous garigues. Its relationships with S. colorata and allied species are also examined. A key of the species belonging to sect. Dipterosperma is provided.

Taxonomic Remarks on the Anthyllis hermanniae L. (Fabaceae, Faboideae) Species Complex of the Mediterranean Flora

Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo

ABSTRACT Taxonomic revision of the populations belonging to the Anthyllis hermanniae L. species complex (Fabaceae, Faboideae) of the Mediterranean flora is given. Two distinct species are recognized: A. hystrix (Willkomm ex Barceló) Cardona, Contandriopoulos & Sierra, restricted to Minorca (Balearic Islands), and A. hermanniae, widespread in the central and eastern Mediterranean area. Within A. hermanniae, seven new subspecies are recognized: subspecies hermanniae (northeastern Mediterranean area), subspecies melitensis (Maltese Archipelago, Malta), subspecies sicula (Italy, Sicily), subspecies brutia (Italy, Calabria), subspecies japygica (Italy, Apulia), subspecies ichnusae (Italy, Sardinia), and subspecies corsica (France, Corsica). Each of these new taxa is described and illustrated. A key of the surveyed taxa is provided.

Siculosciadium, A New Monotypic Genus of Apiaceae from Sicily1

Cristian Brullo; Salvatore Brullo; Stephen R. Downie; Clark A. Danderson; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo

Abstract The results of a morphological and molecular systematic investigation of the poorly known Sicilian endemic species Peucedanum nebrodense (Guss.) Nyman (Apiaceae subfam. Apioideae) are presented in order to better characterize the species and clarify its phylogenetic position. Morphological, karyological, anatomical, and ontogenetic studies indicate that this species is taxonomically distinct. Phylogenetic analysis of combined morphological and nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) ITS sequence data suggests an affinity with Dichoropetalum Fenzl, whereas an unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis, based on 36 morphological characters, suggests that P. nebrodense is similar to Ormosolenia Tausch. Given its unusual life cycle; distinct suffruticose, evergreen, and dwarf habit; and peculiar fruit anatomy, we recognize P. nebrodense as distinct from Ormosolenia and Dichoropetalum, and we treat it as the new monotypic genus Siculosciadium C. Brullo, Brullo, S. R. Downie & Giusso based on S. nebrodense (Guss.) C. Brullo, Brullo, S. R. Downie & Giusso [≡ Pteroselinum nebrodense Guss.], which is lectotypified herein.

Astragalus croaticus (Fabaceae), a new species from Croatia.

Antun Alegro; Sandra Bogdanović; Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo

Astragalus croaticus Alegro, Bogdanović, Brullo & Giusso sp. nova (Fabaceae) is described and illustrated from Dalmatia (Croatia). It. grows on the carbonatic mountains of Biokovo and Mosor on rocky stands. Morphologically, it shows close similari ties with A. sirinicus and A. angustifolius, two thorny species belonging to the sect. Melanocercis. However, A. croaticus has several distinguishing features chiefly in the leaves, flowers and legumes.

Taxonomical considerations of Astragalus creticus Lam. group (Fabaceae) from Crete

Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo

A taxonomical study on the populations belonging to the Astragalus creticus group occurring in Crete has been carried out. Three taxa have been recognized, A. creticus Lam. subsp. creticus, A. creticus Lam. subsp. minoicus subsp. nova, and A. dolinicolus (Brullo and Giusso) Brullo and Giusso. Each taxon is illustrated and examined from the morphological, ecological, and chorological point of view. The relationships with the other allied species of the Astragalus creticus group are emphasized, and an analytical key of the treated taxa is given.

Phytosociological notes on the Lygeum spartum grasslands from Crete

Salvatore Brullo; Gianpietro Giusso Del Galdo; Riccardo Guarino
