Passive temperature-compensating package for optical fiber gratings

Gideon Yoffe; Peter A. Krug; F. Ouellette; D. A. Thorncraft

We demonstrate a compact, passive temperature-compensating package for fiber gratings. The grating is mounted under tension in a package comprising two materials with different thermal-expansion coefficients. As the temperature rises the strain is progressively released, compensating the temperature dependence of the Bragg wavelength. A fiber grating mounted in a package 50 mm long and 5 mm in diameter exhibited a total variation in Bragg wavelength of 0.07 nm over a 100 °C temperature range, compared with 0.92 nm for an uncompensated grating.

In this paper we describe a 12 element multi-wavelength laser diode array chip at the same 10 micron pitch with a 2.7 nm wavelength tuning per element that can span the 32 nm wide c-band, once again using laser selection for coarse tuning and temperature for fine tuning.

Frequency noise characterization of a widely tunable narrow-linewidth DFB laser array source

Jeffrey P. Wilde; Gideon Yoffe; Joseph M. Kahn

Frequency noise measurements have been made on a widely tunable DFB laser array source designed for narrow-linewidth operation. Results show instantaneous linewidths of 90-200 kHz at 30-mW output power over the C-band.

Monolithically integrated high speed DFB BH laser arrays for 10 Gbased LX4 application

Chien-Chung Lin; Gideon Yoffe; Mark Emanuel; Steve Rishton; Dinh Ton; Sarah Zou; Bo Lu; Bardia Pezeshki

A novel DFB laser array is demonstrated for application to the 10 Gbit Ethernet LX4 scheme. The array delivers multiple mW output power and high-speed operation (3.125 Gb/s) at 85/spl deg/C.

100 mW phase-shifted 1550 nm BH DFB arrays with a 10-micron pitch

Sarah Zou; Gideon Yoffe; Bo Lu; John Heanue; Mark Emanuel; G. Parhar; Bardia Pezeshki

Very high yield arrays with excellent linewidth, RIN, and SMSR are demonstrated. In a tunable laser application, we obtained 50 mW fiber coupled power over a 39 nm continuous range by temperature tuning from 15 C to 45 C.
