SKI TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS Ecological Awareness among Different Groups

In this article we analyze some connections between the ecological and the economic aspects of tourism by investigating ecological awareness among different groups. The article will outline reactions of tourists, residents of ski resorts and the Austrian and Belgian population to the ecological problems arising in winter tourism resorts. It is concluded that the Austrian winter tourism sector will have to take ecological considerations into account so that the economic situation can also be improved.

European Sport Index: the social significance of sport in 28 European countries

Abstract This study presents the results of a research project which aimed to operationalize and compare the social significance of sport in the 28 member states of the European Union. To this end, the European Sport Index was constructed. It contains seven indicators which depict the social significance of recreational sport, club sport, school sport, the populations’ access to sport, the socio-political and economic significance of sport, and the significance of professional sport within the observed countries. These indicators were ranked through the benchmarking method from the field of statistics. The resulting ranking of the EU member countries via the Sport Index puts Germany and France on top, while Bulgaria resides in the last place.

Sport Clubs in Austria

With regard to sport organisation in Austria, sport clubs have been playing an important role from the very beginning. Due to the lack of recognition of the significance of sport in Austrias education system sport had to be organised by different means, resulting in the sport clubs setup. This chapter concentrates on the peculiarities of the development and situation of the sport club system in the context of political and socio-historical conditions. Today sport clubs enrich the social and cultural heritage of every region. Especially in the rural municipalities they contribute towards the safekeeping of local identity.

Policing in Austria: Development over the Past 20 Years—Present State and Future Challenges

The primary aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the current state of policing and its development over the last 20 years in Austria. For that purpose, it is divided into eight sections. The first brief provides background information on the country; the second describes the function and organization of the police, which has been reformed recently and is still in reform; the third outlines the crime trend showing a peak in the early 2000s; the fourth deals with the police educational system and especially informs about the academization of training of commissioned officers; the fifth shows changes in policing during the last 20 years, namely its “Europeanization,” but also the expansion of enforcement powers and the centralization, privatization, and technization of policing; furthermore some current trends in policing are illustrated such as the focus on combating cybercrime; the sixth deals with the relationship between police and the media and presents some survey results showing that the public opinion on police is rather positive; the seventh analyzes trends in research on policing and presents the most important institutions conducting such research; the final section mentions some future challenges of policing.

Fernöstlicher Sport und Abendländische Kultur

Seit den sechziger Jahren erfahren fernostliche Kampfsportarten und Meditationsubungen, die Elemente des Gymnastischen und des Spirituellen verbinden, eine auffallige Rezeption in Europa (Eichberg 1983:18; 1983a:132f; Nitschke 1985:295). Im Zuge der „New-Age-Bewegung“ ist in den letzten Jahren das Interesse an diesen Praktiken weiter angewachsen (Goldner 1988:192f1). Dieses steigende Interesse wird recht unterschiedlich gedeutet: Sehen die einen darin entweder eine blose Folge des durch intensiveren Kulturaustausch (Migration, etc.) wachsenden Angebotes an fernostlichen Sportarten oder eine Modestromung, der man keine besondere Beachtung zu schenken braucht, glauben die anderen, das hier ein Wertewandel im Sport, der jedenfalls tiefer reicht als Modestromungen, bzw. eine neue, neben dem Sport sich etablierende Bewegungskultur zum Ausdruck kommt (vgl. die Ubersichtsarbeit von Kleiner 1992:455f). Geht man davon aus, das diese Entwicklung fur eine blose Modewelle schon zu lange dauert, und begreift man Sport als „Kulturphanomen“ (Grupe 1987:2511), abhangig von kulturellen Wertvorstellungen und damit veranderbar, wenn er in verschiedenen Kulturkreisen betrieben wird (Fredersdorf 1986:34–37), stellt sich die berechtigte Frage, ob es im Zuge des Aneignungs- und Verbreitungsprozesses fernostlichen Sports im Westen zu Sinnveranderungen dieser Sportarten kommt. Wirken bestimmte Handlungsstrukturen im asiatischen Sport gleichermasen auf das asiatische und europaische Individuum oder uben diese Praktiken auf den „westlichen“ Menschen einen anderen Reiz aus, werden von ihm anders wahrgenommen, verstanden und erlebt als vom „ostlichen“ Menschen?

Sportartikelkonsum: Ausstattung mit Sportgeräten, Nutzungsfrequenz und Anschaffungsabsichten im Sportbereich

In einer Sekundäranalyse von Daten einer repräsentativen Umfrage zum Freizeitverhalten der Österreicher (“Freizeitmonitor„, n=1977) werden Ausstattung mit Sportgeräten, Nutzung derselben und Anschaffungsabsichten im Sportbereich analysiert. Die durchschnittliche Ausstattung beläuft sich auf knapp vier Sportgeräte. Bei rund einem Viertel der Sportgerätebesitzer steht mindestens ein Gerät unbenutzt herum. Im Schnitt wird die Neuanschaffung etwa eines Sportgerätes geplant oder in Erwägung gezogen. Sozialmerkmale haben nur geringe Erklärungskraft für Nutzungsniveau und Anschaffungsabsichten. Für die Hypothese, daß das Nutzungsniveau mit dem Umfang der Ausstattung sinkt, ist in den Daten keinerlei Beleg zu finden. Bei gehobener Ausstattung werden eher Ausstattungserweiterungen beabsichtigt. Anschaffungsabsichten erweisen sich als weitgehend unabhängig vom Nutzungsniveau.
