The authors developed a system for remotely monitoring human behavior during daily life at home, to improve the security and the quality of life. The activity was monitored through infrared position sensors and magnetic switches. For the falls detection the authors had to develop a smart sensor. The local communications were performed using RF wireless links to reduce the cabling and to allow mobility of the person. An application software performs data exploitation locally but it also performs remote data transmission through the network. This project aim at expanding the telecare solution to a larger population of elderly people who are presently forced to live in hospices.

At the time of hospitalization, it is essential to evaluate the general health status of a patient and to follow up the trends during therapy. Our work is focused on a set of tools for the measurement of patient activity. In this paper, we propose a few indicators of the patient activities of daily living, such as mobility, agitation, repartitions of stays, and displacements. As a result of this work, a diagnostic system was developed that could lead to a deeper knowledge of human activity rhythms in normal situations

This paper deals with a new medical information system called Alarm Net designed for smart healthcare. Based on an advanced Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), it specifically targets assisted-living residents and others who may benefit from continuous and remote health monitoring. We present the advantages, objectives, and status of the system built at the Department of Computer Science at UVA. Early results of the prototype suggest a strong potential for WSNs to open new research perspectives for ad hoc deployment of multi-modal sensors and improved quality of medical care

In this paper, we present a software tool for in- home resident activity simulation, incorporating now an environmental sound module, and developed for the purpose of home health care data fusion studies. Activities, represented by displacements scenarios and modeled using a Markov model, are correlated with ambient audio events. Physiological and environmental data are also integrated in the simulation process on demand by the users. The goal of the simulator is to generate huge amounts of data in short periods of time, allowing the evaluation of preliminary custom algorithms, before the recording of long-term constraining patient health monitoring using medical intelligent systems. Direct applications of the simulator are briefly exposed in the paper showing the potentiality of the software tool.
