Interaction between universities and companies is common in Countries considered to be developed and innovative. In Brazil, this strategy is not widely used, although some relevant actions have produced good results in the pharmaceutical sector. The Brazilian Innovation Law, which is considered a milestone, created the Technology Innovation Centers (TICs) in universities, and is seen by the Ministry of Health in Brazil as having great strategic promise within the area of drugs and medicine. In this regard, this article seeks to present the findings of an exploratory research project investigating the participation of Brazilian universities in the formation of strategic partnerships focused on the development of drugs, after the advent of the Brazilian Innovation Law. An exploratory study was used as an instrument of methodological support, backed by a survey whose results allowed the authors to identify some significant reflections structured in the university-pharmaceutical industry-government approach.

This article discusses alternatives to the use and management of land in planting tomatoes in San Jose de Uba, a city in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, in order to promote sustainable agriculture in the region, emphasizing the economic, environmental and cultural aspects of the problem. The cultural prospect increases the complexity of the issue, requiring the use of a methodology capable of dealing with all the subjectivity involved in the decision making process. The study aims to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development in the region, starting with a decision-making process based on the views of the farmer, respecting the cultural aspect of the problem. The characteristics of the decision-making environment indicated the use of a combination of multicriteria decision support methods - MACBETH and VIP Analysis - for selecting the best alternative capable of meeting the proposed objectives

Abstract The Composition of Probabilistic Preferences (CPP) is employed here to combine evaluations of a set of factors determined by adding human reliability criteria to the traditional FMEA criteria. The risks according to each of nine criteria are evaluated for ten failure modes by a set of seven evaluators. The probabilistic transformation of CPP employs a beta distribution, whose parameters are estimated on the basis of the means and modes of the samples of seven evaluation values. In the case studied, higher discrimination is provided by the use of the sample means.

The use of pipelines for natural gas transportation is continuously growing around the world. Pipeline accidents affecting the environment, people, assets, and company reputations have historically occurred as a result of failures in risk management. Bow Tie diagrams could provide a clear and resourceful risk management method for the safety and risk practitioners toolkit. This article describes a case study using Bow Tie methodology to supply an analysis of the effectiveness of existing controls in pipelines and provide a better understanding, mainly to operators and the community, as to pipeline risks and their controls, by presenting a graphical interface. Thus, this article contributes to a better perception and understanding of pipeline risks and can encourage companies to use the main causes, preventive barriers, mitigation barriers, shortfalls, recommended actions, degradation factors and their safeguards as guidelines to construct Bow Tie diagrams for their pipelines in the safety management process. Additionally, the company could use the diagrams as a tool to communicate with the community about the risks and to show stakeholders that the risks are under control.

Considering the need to assess the corporate sustainability, get a compromised solution for multi-objective functions taking into account several criteria, according to their economic, environmental and social performance, usually is an important topic and a really tough problem for decision authorities. The paper presents a novel model for solving decision making problems in the evaluation of corporate sustainability. The proposal was applied in the analysis of sustainability indicators of energy sector in Brazil. The principle of the technique of preference ordering by similarity to ideal solution is based on the premise that the solution should be chosen as close as possible the positive ideal solution and as far as possible the negative ideal solution. The model applied proved to be robust for the evaluation and ranking of companies with respect to aspects of sustainability observed.

In order to avoid mistakes and to save a great deal of time in analysis, an innovative methodology was developed that can analyze the well operations and rig characteristics involved to define the best emergency disconnect sequence (EDS) available. A solution was developed based on the characteristics of the rigs and blowout preventers (BOPs), and six variables were considered that directly affect the choice of EDS. All possible combinations of 64 scenarios were analyzed, and the priority of choice of the EDS was defined empirically. This paper presents an approach to EDS risk management and examples of exposure time (time without riser safety margin and shear capability) for the same well, which can be lowered from 13% to 0.1%. The impact of this reduction is related to the ability of the BOP to cut some of the heavy casings, in addition to improved availability of EDS modes. This implementation opened up many possibilities for the performance of risk exposure analysis, enabling comparison of several BOP configurations of contracted rigs and selection of the best options. This innovative approach allowed a better management of the rig schedules, prioritizing safety aspects and making it possible to allocate the fleet in a systematic way.

The Composition of Probabilistic Preferences is here applied to combine eight indicators of human development. The four components of HDI are considered together with indices of inequality in longevity, schooling, and income, and the UNDP Gender Development Index. To compose the probabilities of preference by the different criteria, a pessimistic and conservative point of view is taken. This point of view, while generating the global score, results in employing for each option the probability of not presenting the lowest evaluation according to any criterion, increasing the importance assigned in the computations to the proximity to the frontier of worst performances. Alternative rankings of the 188 countries ranked in the 2015 and the 2016 Human Development Report are obtained. Capacities allowing for interactions between up to eight components are employed. Representative profiles of ordered classes are derived from the rankings. Classifications of the countries into previously determined classes are also performed.

Drilling centers are collaborative environments dedicated to facilitate decision-making in 16 the well construction, where multidisciplinary teams work to support operations. The oil operators 17 usually have drilling centers with different types of ergonomic features with considerable potential 18 of integration, creating the opportunity to an Ergonomic Workplace Analysis. This paper aims to 19 present the analysis of infrastructure requirements of one specific company in Brazil. The method 20 was based on a survey with employees, which, coped with a statistical analysis, enabled 21 understanding the impact of the layout requirements. The result is an approach to design 22 collaborative environments, standardizing and defining models for the industry. 23
