As communication systems and technology become more advanced and complex, it will be increasingly important to focus on users individual needs. For most devices and services there is no one-size-fits-all solution that allows people to derive maximum benefit and ease of use. Instead, there is a need for people to have services and devices that can be personalized to their individual needs. Personalization of services and devices is a key success factor for achieving services that are optimized for a range of situations (e.g. On the move, At a meeting, At home). Behind every instance of personalization there is a user profile that stores details of the user, their preferences, context of use and other information that can be used to deliver a user experience tailored to their individual preferences. This paper describes the standardization work at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), developing an architectural framework for user profile management. It explains a solution for context sensitive automatic activation of user profiles, while still providing the user with the option to activate profiles manually.

As communication systems and technology become more advanced and complex, it will be increasingly important to focus on users’ individual needs. Personalization can range from simple cosmetic factors such as customised ring tones to the complex tailoring of the presentation of a shopping web site to a users personal interests, or highly personalized eHealth systems including sensor networks. Personalization and effective user profile management will be necessary to ensure the uptake and success of new services and devices and it is therefore important to focus on the users’ requirements in this area and define solutions that meet these requirements. This paper describes an architectural framework for user profile management and explains a solution for context sensitive automatic activation of user profiles.

Industry and end users interest in personalization of services and user devices continues to increase. Many user devices and services already contain settings and preferences that are specific to that user device or a network and unrelated to any other. Behind every instance of personalization is a profile that stores the user preferences, context of use and other information that can be used to deliver a user experience tailored to the individual users’ needs and preferences. In order to make use of the user preferences for a range of services and devices, there is a need for standardization of preferences and the architecture that enables their interoperability. In this scenario, the paper illustrates how two complementary technologies, XDM by OMA and XDI by OASIS, may be seamlessly integrated in Next Generation Networks to enable interoperability of user profile data management between telecommunication and internet services.
