The Democratic Framing of Protest in the Age of Revolution: The Language of Civil Rights and the Organization of Petitions and Demonstrations in Belgium, 1830–1848

The language of civil rights as inscribed in the liberal Belgian Constitution of 1831 played a crucial role in the ways people without formal representation in parliament organized and expressed themselves politically during the first half of the nineteenth century. The way their organizations and protest actions were legitimated—through references to constitutionally guaranteed civil rights—was a sign of adaptation to the new forms of democratic politics. No matter how short lived their organizations often proved to be, they oriented people without suffrage to the basic structures of civil society by evoking rights whose exercise was guaranteed by the constitution: most importantly, the right to petition and the freedom of association and peaceful assembly.

DE GENTSE COOPERATIE VOORUIT OP DE WERELDTENTOONSTELLING VAN 1913: In 1913 streek het fenomeen van de Wereldtentoonstelling neer in Gent. Aan de vooravond van de Eerste Wereldoorlog toonde dit evenement een samenleving op het breukvlak van de moderniteit. Er was veel in beweging in 1913. Vrouwen, arbeiders en in Vlaanderen ook Nederlandstalige intellectuelen eisten hun plaats op in de publieke ruimte en de verruimde democratie. Op spectaculaire wijze slaagde de Wereldtentoonstelling erin een hele reeks maatschappelijke tegenstellingen te overbruggen: arbeid en industrie, de westerse en de koloniale cultuur. De belangrijkste tegenstelling die ze wilde oplossen was die tussen moderniteit en geschiedenis. In het kader van het feestjaar 100 jaar Vooruit focust dit artikel op de ambiguiteit van het vooroorlogse socialisme in Gent en op de wijze waarop Vooruit zichzelf presenteerde op de wereldtentoonstelling.
