Job advertisements on Linkedin. Generic integrity and evolution

This paper focuses on job advertisements posted on LinkedIn, a Social Networking Site (SNS) tailored to the workplace environment. The job advertisement is a long-lived genre, which existed mainly in the daily/weekly press environment in the form of classified ad until it migrated to the Web. A further development came from the rise of SNSs: the job advert moved to an online community context, with all the social implications of this fact. The aim is to describe the peculiarities of the LinkedIn job advertisement as a sub-genre, identifying similarities with and differences from job ads posted on other online platforms, as well as from the traditional printed job ads published in newspapers. Findings provide evidence of a significant degree of generic integrity, with some changes due to the migration to the web environment, and even more meaningful changes due to the re-contextualization of the genre in a SNS.

Codificare il diritto alla città in un contesto multiculturale e plurilingue

This chapter examines the multilingual text of the Montréal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities (CRR), published on the website of the City of Montréal in several languages – French, English, Arabic, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese. It focuses on the Italian version of the Charter, comparing it with other language versions, and in particular the English and French ones, and discusses the main problems involved in the process of re-writing/translating this text – many of an institutional and cultural nature. It also provides representative examples of the procedures adopted to produce a viable version, while at the same time effectively conveying exactly the same principles and notions. The rewriting process enacted to produce the various language versions is also examined in terms of its relevance to the building of a shared discourse of citizenship in the municipality of Montréal, especially considering that the text has played a key role in introducing the concept of ‘citizen responsibility’, symmetrical to that of ‘citizen rights’, and providing a framework for both their definition and application. The results of the analysis testify to the crucial importance taken on in this context by re-writing, which becomes a powerful instrument to promote inclusiveness, civic responsibility and accountability on the part of the institutions. Traduzione, riscrittura e manipolazione ideologica: le ‘cover’ delle canzoni di Dylan negli anni ‘60

This study investigates the translation of the lyrics of Bob Dylan’s songs into Italian. In particular, it focuses on the translations produced in the 1960s, when the Italian public was just starting to get acquainted with the most innovative cultural and artistic phenomena then occurring abroad, and in particular in the US. While in those days only a limited intellectual elite was seriously interested in such phenomena and in their political and artistic relevance, the record industry – then thriving – merely exploited them for the superficial appeal they could have on the public at large, at a time when a rising wave of juvenilism and xenophily was sweeping the still largely parochial scene of contemporary Italian culture. Against this background, this study discusses the main strategies adopted in the translation of Dylan’s texts into Italian, focusing on two among his most popular songs, “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Rainy Day Women 12 & 35”, and shows that the translation evidently gives more consideration to the recipients’ tastes and to the record industry’s marketing strategies than to the original message, which is altered and deprived of its potentially subversive ideological value, an alteration also made possible by the failure to abide by copyright laws (Dylan’s authorship is not even acknowledge on record labels). The analysis not only contributes to shedding light on the cultural value of Dylan’s early works in Italian contemporary culture, but also provides the opportunity to discuss the ideological potential of the translator’s work, which, requiring a whole sequence of decisions, inherently offers a high potential for (more or less inadvertent) manipulation and ideological defusing.
