Many telecom operators are deploying their own cloud infrastructure with the two-fold objective of providing cloud services to their customers and enabling network function virtualization. In this article we present an architecture we call SHINE, which focuses on orchestrating cloud with heterogeneous access and core networks. In this architecture intra and inter DC connectivity is dynamically controlled, maximizing the overall performance in terms of throughput and latency while minimizing total costs. The main building blocks are: a future-proof network architecture that can scale to offer potentially unlimited bandwidth based on an active remote node (ARN) to interface end-users and the core network; an innovative distributed DC architecture consisting of micro-DCs placed in selected core locations to accelerate content delivery, reducing core network traffic, and ensuring very low latency; and dynamic orchestration of the distributed DC and access and core network segments. SHINE will provide unprecedented quality of experience, greatly reducing costs by coordinating network and cloud and facilitating service chaining by virtualizing network functions.

With the spread of survivable network the existing quality of service (QoS) classes are required to be expanded with service availability and maintainability issues. By including them in the service level agreements (SLAs) new and more complex requirements of commercial applications can be guaranteed. In this paper, a uniform framework of extending all types of QoS definitions with service availability characterization is proposed, and a new concept called quality of resilience (QoR) is defined. In addition, all service QoR parameters are expressed using the downtime probability density function and its derivatives. The new QoR factors meet the requirements of users, and the feasibility concerns of operators, which is illustrated by evaluating and comparing various resilience schemes in terms of the QoR framework

Abstract— Integration and full interoperability are today the new frontier for research in wide-area networks. A new European Commission Project, MUPBED, has been recently activated, with the main purpose to integrate and validate technology and network solutions in order to enable the operation of a future European research infrastructure capable of supporting advanced applications. The target network solution is based on the integration of the IP/MPLS layer with the ASON/GMPLS layer, both controlled by a unified control plane, and it will be able to provide connectivity on demand directly driven by the applications. Experimental assessments of this capability will be achieved by building a pan-European open test platform, including existing test-beds and national research networks, where a user community of European research projects and institutions will field-trial their high-end applications. In this paper an overview of MUPBED Project, its main objectives and its network vision are presented.
