Light scattering by large ellipsoidal particles. I. Rayleigh—Debye approach

Josip J. Petres; Gjuro Deželić

Abstract The angular dependence of the light scattered by monodisperse barium sulfate particles was determined at wavelengths of light 546 and 436 nm. The particles had the shape of prolate ellipsoids of revolution with different axial ratios. The results are discussed on the basis of the Rayleigh—Debye theory, and experimental and theoretical values of P (ϑ) factors for ellipsoidal particles are compared

On the refractive index increment of bovine plasma albumin at low concentrations

J. P. Kratohvil; Gjuro Deželić; Nada Deželić

Abstract Refractive index increment, dn dc , of the two samples of bovine plasma albumin in water and 0.05 M NaCl was determined by means of an interferometer and a differential refractometer. Contrary to a report in the literature, it was found that dn dc was constant, within the precision of the interferometer, even at the concentrations of the protein as low as about 8 × 10−5 gm per milliliter. The values reported in the literature for various samples and a variety of conditions were collected and tabulated for comparison.

Computerized Epidemiometric Model of Shigellosis and Its Use in Assessing Potential Usefulness of New Tools for Disease Control

Jadranka Božikov; Gjuro Deželić; Branko Cvjetanović

A computerized prototype of the epidemiometric model of bacillary dysentery was developed in order to study its potential usefulness in public health. The multistate model was built on the basis of the natural history of shigellosis by formulating an appropriate set of difference equations relevant to the flow of population between epidemiological classes. Necessary software was developed for performing interactive simulation games. Simulations included studying the natural course of the disease in a stable endemic situation, the results of the application of different types of vaccines, both real and hypothetical. The epidemiometric model of shigellosis also appears to be useful in the evaluation of the projects aimed at the development of new control measures, such as new vaccines against this disease. Further investigation of shigellosis modelling is needed in order to design realistic models of this disease with complex etiology.

Analysis of data on leukocyte surface markers for recognition of leukemia/lymphoma phenotype pattern

Mladen Petrovečki; Branka Užarević; Matko Marušić; Gjuro Deželić

OBJECTIVE This study was designed to test the algorithm for the recognition of leukemia/lymphoma pattern, based on cell immunophenotype assessed using specific monoclonal antibodies and measured using flow cytometry. DESIGN AND METHOD Analysis was performed by comparing phenotyping data with reference data, followed by scoring of such comparisons. Output of the recognition was designed as a report list of possible diagnoses (defined as objects in the informatic system). Reference data were compiled from the respective literature. RESULTS From 57 blood and bone marrow samples tested in this study, accurate recognition of the real diagnosis (object) appeared on the first four places of the report list in 54 (94.7%) samples. CONCLUSION The list of the objects recognized by the use of algorithm appeared to be helpful in making a differential diagnosis, occasionally pointing to the states that the physician had not in mind at the start of the analysis.

Inductive Learning as a Method for Medical Decision Making

Gjuro Deželić; Josipa Kern

A system for inductive learning is used in automatic construction of decision trees. The results and experience in its use in the field of rheumatology are presented. The decision trees have been obtained under different conditions, i. e. without and with pruning. Variability of results has been noted and discussed. It is concluded that such decision trees could be a useful guide in clinical decisions.

A microcomputer method for continuous system simulation in health care.

Jadranka Božikov; Gjuro Deželić

A method for continuous system simulation in biomedicine and health care intended for use with personal computers is described. The method is applicable to multistate deterministic models and based on the use of standard spreadsheet programs used with such computers. It includes features such as model implementation, changes of simulation parameters, execution of simulation experiments as well as tabular and graphic presentation of simulation results. The method can be used for simulation of systems in epidemiology, health-care organization and other biomedical fields where deterministic models are suitable tools for studying phenomena connected with live systems.

A Computer Simulation Program for the Assessment of Multistate Epidemiological Models of Infectious Diseases

Jadranka Božikov; Branko Cvjetanović; Gjuro Deželić

The computer simulation of multistate epidemiological models is presented and the conditions for performing simulation experiments are discussed. A general purpose interactive software package for continuous simulation developed on this basis is implemented. Successful tests were made with several models of infectious diseases. The need for the introduction of sensitivity analysis into simulation experiments is emphasized.

A Health Database as a Tool for Relating Medical and Environmental-Health Data

Gjuro Deželić; Josipa Kern; S. Vuletić; N. Deželić

In comprehensive health care programs, such as programs for fighting chronic non-infectious diseases in population groups (1), a huge amount of data is generated, being by nature multidimensional and showing complex relationships.
