Abstract Because parental alienation syndrome (PAS) is newly recognized and described, it must be redefined and refined as new cases are observed and the phenomenon becomes better understood. New evidence suggests that alienation may be provoked by other than custodial matters, that cases of alleged sexual abuse may be hinted, that slow judgments by courts exacerbate the problem, that prolonged alienation of the child may trigger other forms of mental illness, and that too little remains known of the long-term consequences to alienated children and their families.

Do able students use software in unique ways and are certain types of software especially appropriate for them? This exploratory study used 12 subjects and a prize-winning software package, The Factory, to examine the possibility of special computing needs. Bright students more often used a plan in their strategy and offered suggestions for improving the software in ways which indicated monitoring of their own performance. It remains to be shown whether or not other students can learn to use software in these ways, and to transfer such performance to new, unprompted situations. In other words, do microcomputers deserve a special place in “gifted education” apart from their special place in education?

The study investigated the feasibility of interactive computer-assisted testing (ICAT) as an effective instructional method and its effects on attitudes towards computer-assisted instruction (CAI). In addition, the final performance scores were examined. Five computer quizzes consisting of twenty randomly drawn multiple-choice questions were individually administered on ten Teletype terminals. A feedback mechanism was incorporated in the ICAT program and provided detailed explanations of each item. The resulting low correlation between final performance and ICAT scores is discussed with reference to the feasibility, improvement and implementation of interactive computer-assisted testing.

Telecommunication networks have had a significant impact on the provision of library services. Networks such as the INTERNET and Canadas CA*NET have modified the manner in which librarians manipulate and distribute data. Both the United States and Canada have decided to invest in the creation of more powerful high-speed communication networks. In the U.S., the project is called the National Research and Education Network (NREN) while in Canada the corresponding project is called the Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry, and Education/Reseau national de communications a grande vitesse (CANARIE). By exploiting the services and capabilities in existing and future networks, libraries are able to remain key partners active in,research and education. The provision of new services, however, has required the investment of scarce resources. With the advent of CANARIE, libraries will have to increase substantially the amount of resources devoted to using the network. Failure to do so will hin...
