S. Jha; C. Mitros; Amer Lahamer; Sherif Yehia; Glenn M. Julian; R. A. Dunlap; G. Stroink; Z. M. Stadnik

Mössbauer effect studies of57Co-doped La2CuO4−y were performed at temperatures between 4.2 K and room temperature. These confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering of these compounds below room temperature. Temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting shows that the hyperfine field is at an angle with thec-axis.

M. Elfazani; M. DeMarco; S. Jha; Glenn M. Julian; James W. Blue

The Time Differential Perturbed Angular Correlation (TDPAC) technique has been used to measuare the hyperfine magnetic field at cadmium impurity located at the Ga site in Ni2MnGa (Tc = 379 K) and at the In site in Ni2MnIn (Tc = 323 K), Cu2MnIn (Tc = 500 K), and Au2MnIn (Tc = 140 K). Measurements utilized the 84‐nsec, 247‐keV state in Cd‐111. The temperature dependence of the hyperfine field, up to approximately .9Tc, was measured for Ni2MnGa, Ni2MnIn, and Cu2MnIn; in each case it approximately follows te Brillouin curve for J = 5/2. The sign of the hyperfine field at Cd has been measured to be negative at room temperature in Ni2MnGa, Ni2MnIn, and Cu2MnIn.

Hyperfine magnetic field measurement in Heusler alloys with rhodium‐99 and indium‐111 by TDPAC technique

S. Jha; Naser Saleh; Glenn M. Julian; T.E. Ward; James W. Blue; David C. Liu

The hyperfine magnetic field (hmf) at nonmagnetic impurities Ru and Cd in Heusler alloys Rh2MnGe and Rh2MnSn has been measured as a function of temperature by the Time Differential Perturbed Angular Correlation (TDPAC) technique. Measurement of the hmf at the Ru utilized the 20.7‐nsec 90 keV state in 99Ru populated in the decay of 16‐d 99Rh; alloys were prepared using Rh metal powder bombarded with ?60 MeV protons. Measurement of hmf at Cd in Rh2MnSn utilized the 84‐nsec 247 keV state in 111Cd populated in the decay of 2.8‐d 111In; the alloy was prepared by substituting for 2 atomic per cent of Sn with In metal bombarded with 37 MeV protons. The measured hmf’s in kG at Ru impurity at Rh site are (with temperatures in parentheses) in Rh2MnGe: 195±11 (77 K), 126±4 (293 K), and 49±4 (355 K); in Rh2MnSn: 137±2 (293 K) and 37±6 (355 K). The measured hmf’s at Cd impurity (presumably at Sn site) in Rh2MnSn are 189±5 (77 K), 113±5 (293 K), and 33±3 (373 K).

Site and probe dependence of hyperfine magnetic field in L21 Heusler alloys X2MnZ (X=Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd and Z=Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Pb)

S. Jha; H. M. Seyoum; M. DeMarco; Glenn M. Julian; D. A. Stubbs; James W. Blue; M. T. X. Silva; A. Vasquez

Results of TDPAC and Mössbauer measurements of hyperfine magnetic fields in L21 Heusler alloys X2MnZ are given. TDPAC utilized Cd-111 from In-111 at the Z site and Ag-111 at the X site, and Ru-99 from Rh-99 at the X site. Mössbauer studies utilized Sn-119 at the Z site or at the Mn site. A compilation of hmf values is presented, and estimates of the polarized electron density are given for 1 nn, 2 nn, and 3 nn of the Mn ions in these alloys.

S. Jha; Mohamed Elfazani; Sherif Yehia; C. Mitros; Sanjeev Kumar; Glenn M. Julian; R. A. Dunlap; A. Vasquez; J. G. M. DaCunha; S.M.M. Ramos

Hyperfine magnetic fields are measured at Cd-111 and Sn-119 in CdCr2Se4 and CuCr2Se4, as well as at Cd-111 in CdCr2S4 and CuCr2S4. Quadrupole frequencies are measured for Cd-111 in CdCr2S4 and CdCrvSe4 above Tc.

Hyperfine magnetic field at Cd impurity site in L21 Heusler alloys Rh2MnGe and Rh2MnPb by TDPAC technique

S. Jha; Robert D. Black; Glenn M. Julian; James W. Blue; David C. Liu

The hyperfine magnetic field (hmf) at nonmagnetic cadmium impurity in L21 Heusler alloys Rh2MnGe (Tc=450 K) and Rh2MnPb (Tc=338 K) has been measured as a function of temperature by Time Differential Perturbed Angular Correlation (TDPAC) technique. Measurement utilized the 84‐nsec 247‐keV state (μ=−.7656 nm) in Cd‐111 populated in the decay of 2.8‐d In‐111. Alloys were prepared by substituting for 2 atomic % of Ge or Pb by In metal which had been bombarded with 30‐MeV protons. The measured hmf’s in kG at cadmium impurity, presumed to be at Ge or Pb site, are (with temperatures in parentheses) in Rh2MnGe 188±6 (77 K) and 160±3 (293 K); and in Rh2MnPb 143±2 (77 K), 114±2 (200 K), 84±2 (273 K) and 53±1 (293 K).

An57Fe Mössbauer effect study of the highT c superconductor GdBa2Cu3O7−y

S. Jha; D. Suyanto; C. Mitros; G. Stroink; Z. M. Stadnik; R. A. Dunlap; Glenn M. Julian

Split source57Fe Mössbauer effect spectroscopy has been performed between 4 K and 295 K on the superconducting perovskite GdBa2Cu3O7−y. No evidence is seen for magnetic splitting at low temperatures as reported in some split absorder57Fe Mössbauer experiments on this material. There is evidence for phonon mode softening, as observed for119Sn Mössbauer spectra of some other highTc superconductors.
