A wavelet-based image fusion tutorial

Abstract The objective of image fusion is to combine information from multiple images of the same scene. The result of image fusion is a new image which is more suitable for human and machine perception or further image-processing tasks such as segmentation, feature extraction and object recognition. Different fusion methods have been proposed in literature, including multiresolution analysis. This paper is an image fusion tutorial based on wavelet decomposition, i.e. a multiresolution image fusion approach. We can fuse images with the same or different resolution level, i.e. range sensing, visual CCD, infrared, thermal or medical. The tutorial performs a synthesis between the multiscale-decomposition-based image approach (Proc. IEEE 87 (8) (1999) 1315), the ARSIS concept (Photogramm. Eng. Remote Sensing 66 (1) (2000) 49) and a multisensor scheme (Graphical Models Image Process. 57 (3) (1995) 235). Some image fusion examples illustrate the proposed fusion approach. A comparative analysis is carried out against classical existing strategies, including those of multiresolution.

Overview and Current Status of Remote Sensing Applications Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Abstract Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) is presently in continuous development at a rapid pace. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or more extensively Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are platforms considered under the RPAs paradigm. Simultaneously, the development of sensors and instruments to be installed onboard such platforms is growing exponentially. These two factors together have led to the increasing use of these platforms and sensors for remote sensing applications with new potential. Thus, the overall goal of this paper is to provide a panoramic overview about the current status of remote sensing applications based on unmanned aerial platforms equipped with a set of specific sensors and instruments. First, some examples of typical platforms used in remote sensing are provided. Second, a description of sensors and technologies is explored which are onboard instruments specifically intended to capture data for remote sensing applications. Third, multi-UAVs in collaboration, coordination, and cooperation in remote sensing are considered. Finally, a collection of applications in several areas are proposed, where the combination of unmanned platforms and sensors, together with methods, algorithms, and procedures provide the overview in very different remote sensing applications. This paper presents an overview of different areas, each independent from the others, so that the reader does not need to read the full paper when a specific application is of interest

A vision-based method for weeds identification through the Bayesian decision theory

One of the objectives of precision agriculture is to minimize the volume of herbicides that are applied to the fields through the use of site-specific weed management systems. This paper outlines an automatic computer vision-based approach for the detection and differential spraying of weeds in corn crops. The method is designed for post-emergence herbicide applications where weeds and corn plants display similar spectral signatures and the weeds appear irregularly distributed within the crops field. The proposed strategy involves two processes: image segmentation and decision making. Image segmentation combines basic suitable image processing techniques in order to extract cells from the image as the low level units. Each cell is described by two area-based measuring relationships between crop and weeds. The decision making determines the cells to be sprayed based on the computation of a posterior probability under a Bayesian framework. The a priori probability in this framework is computed taking into account the dynamic of the physical system (tractor) where the method is embedded. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) the combination of the image segmentation and decision making processes and (2) the decision making itself which exploits a previous knowledge which is mapped as the a priori probability. The performance of the method is illustrated by comparative analysis against some existing strategies.

A computer vision approach for weeds identification through Support Vector Machines

This paper outlines an automatic computer vision system for the identification of avena sterilis which is a special weed seed growing in cereal crops. The final goal is to reduce the quantity of herbicide to be sprayed as an important and necessary step for precision agriculture. So, only areas where the presence of weeds is important should be sprayed. The main problems for the identification of this kind of weed are its similar spectral signature with respect the crops and also its irregular distribution in the field. It has been designed a new strategy involving two processes: image segmentation and decision making. The image segmentation combines basic suitable image processing techniques in order to extract cells from the image as the low level units. Each cell is described by two area-based attributes measuring the relations among the crops and weeds. The decision making is based on the Support Vector Machines and determines if a cell must be sprayed. The main findings of this paper are reflected in the combination of the segmentation and the Support Vector Machines decision processes. Another important contribution of this approach is the minimum requirements of the system in terms of memory and computation power if compared with other previous works. The performance of the method is illustrated by comparative analysis against some existing strategies.

A Hopfield Neural Network for Image Change Detection

This paper outlines an optimization relaxation approach based on the analog Hopfield neural network (HNN) for solving the image change detection problem between two images. A difference image is obtained by subtracting pixel by pixel both images. The network topology is built so that each pixel in the difference image is a node in the network. Each node is characterized by its state, which determines if a pixel has changed. An energy function is derived, so that the network converges to stable states. The analog Hopfields model allows each node to take on analog state values. Unlike most widely used approaches, where binary labels (changed/unchanged) are assigned to each pixel, the analog property provides the strength of the change. The main contribution of this paper is reflected in the customization of the analog Hopfield neural network to derive an automatic image change detection approach. When a pixel is being processed, some existing image change detection procedures consider only interpixel relations on its neighborhood. The main drawback of such approaches is the labeling of this pixel as changed or unchanged according to the information supplied by its neighbors, where its own information is ignored. The Hopfield model overcomes this drawback and for each pixel allows a tradeoff between the influence of its neighborhood and its own criterion. This is mapped under the energy function to be minimized. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated by comparative analysis against some existing image change detection methods

Automatic detection of crop rows in maize fields with high weeds pressure

This paper proposes a new method, oriented to crop row detection in images from maize fields with high weed pressure. The vision system is designed to be installed onboard a mobile agricultural vehicle, i.e. submitted to gyros, vibrations and undesired movements. The images are captured under image perspective, being affected by the above undesired effects. The image processing consists of three main processes: image segmentation, double thresholding, based on the Otsus method, and crop row detection. Image segmentation is based on the application of a vegetation index, the double thresholding achieves the separation between weeds and crops and the crop row detection applies least squares linear regression for line adjustment. Crop and weed separation becomes effective and the crop row detection can be favorably compared against the classical approach based on the Hough transform. Both gain effectiveness and accuracy thanks to the double thresholding that makes the main finding of the paper.

Support Vector Machines for crop/weeds identification in maize fields

In Precision Agriculture (PA) automatic image segmentation for plant identification is an important issue to be addressed. Emerging technologies in optical imaging sensors play an important role in PA. In maize fields, site-specific treatments, with chemical products or mechanical manipulations, are applied for weeds elimination. Maize is an irrigated crop, also unprotected from rainfall. After a strong rain, soil materials (particularly clays) mixed with water impregnate the vegetative cover. The green spectral component associated to the plants is masked by the dominant red spectral component coming from soil materials. This makes methods based on the greenness identification fail under such situations. We propose a new method based on Support Vector Machines for identifying plants with green spectral components masked and unmasked. The method is also valid for post-treatment evaluation, where loss of greenness in weeds is identified with the effectiveness of the treatment and in crops with damage or masking. The performance of the method allows to verify its viability for automatic tasks in agriculture based on image processing.

Multilevel Thresholding Segmentation Based on Harmony Search Optimization

In this paper, a multilevel thresholding (MT) algorithm based on the harmony search algorithm (HSA) is introduced. HSA is an evolutionary method which is inspired in musicians improvising new harmonies while playing. Different to other evolutionary algorithms, HSA exhibits interesting search capabilities still keeping a low computational overhead. The proposed algorithm encodes random samples from a feasible search space inside the image histogram as candidate solutions, whereas their quality is evaluated considering the objective functions that are employed by the Otsu’s or Kapur’s methods. Guided by these objective values, the set of candidate solutions are evolved through the HSA operators until an optimal solution is found. Experimental results demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method for the segmentation of digital images.

Automatic expert system for weeds/crops identification in images from maize fields

Automation for the identification of plants, based on imaging sensors, in agricultural crops represents an important challenge. In maize fields, site-specific treatments, with chemical products or mechanical manipulations, can be applied for weeds elimination. This requires the identification of weeds and crop plants. Sometimes these plants appear impregnated by materials coming from the soil (particularly clays). This appears when the field is irrigated or after rain, particularly when the water falls with some force. This makes traditional approaches based on images greenness identification fail under such situations. Indeed, most pixels belonging to plants, but impregnated, are misidentified as soil pixels because they have lost their natural greenness. This loss of greenness also occurs after treatment when weeds have begun the process of death. To correctly identify all plants, independently of the loss of greenness, we design an automatic expert system based on image segmentation procedures. The performance of this method is verified favorably.

Automatic expert system based on images for accuracy crop row detection in maize fields

This paper proposes an automatic expert system for accuracy crop row detection in maize fields based on images acquired from a vision system. Different applications in maize, particularly those based on site specific treatments, require the identification of the crop rows. The vision system is designed with a defined geometry and installed onboard a mobile agricultural vehicle, i.e. submitted to vibrations, gyros or uncontrolled movements. Crop rows can be estimated by applying geometrical parameters under image perspective projection. Because of the above undesired effects, most often, the estimation results inaccurate as compared to the real crop rows. The proposed expert system exploits the human knowledge which is mapped into two modules based on image processing techniques. The first one is intended for separating green plants (crops and weeds) from the rest (soil, stones and others). The second one is based on the system geometry where the expected crop lines are mapped onto the image and then a correction is applied through the well-tested and robust Theil-Sen estimator in order to adjust them to the real ones. Its performance is favorably compared against the classical Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.
