The sexual behavior of male rats after bilateral section of the hypogastric nerve and removal of the accessory genital glands

Knut Larsson; Göran Swedin

Abstract The sexual behavior of male rats was studied after bilateral section of the hypogastric nerve alone or in combination with removal of the seminal vesicles, the coagulating glands and the ventral lobes of the prostate. With exception of a slight increase in number of mounts no changes in the mating pattern were observed following either operation. It was concluded that neither sympathetic smooth muscle innervation of the accessory genital organs, nor afferent influences from the seminal vesicles and the ventral lobes of the prostate are necessary for normal mating behavior of the male rat.

Comparison of the effects of α-methyltyrosine on the nor-adrenaline stores of different peripheral organs of the rat

Göran Swedin

Abstract The time course of NA depletion and organ contents of α-MPT after repeated doses of the methyl ester of α-MPT (H44/68) was studied in the heart, innervated and decentralized submaxillary gland, seminal vesicle and vas deferens of the rat. A definite difference in effect of α-MPT on the different peripheral NA stores was demonstrated. While the innervated hearts and submaxillary glands had lost 22 and 36% of their NA respectively in 10 hrs, the short adrenergic neurons of the vas deferens and the seminal vesicle retained about normal NA levels even 16 hrs after repeated doses of α-MPT, despite very high organ concentrations of the drug and regardless of whether the adrenergic nerve supply via the hypogastric nerve was intact or not. Possible mechanisms for this resistance to α-MPT are discussed.

Pre- and postganglionic denervation of the vas deferens and accessory male genital glands: Short term effects on fertility in the rat

Göran Swedin

The effect of bilateral section of the hypogastric nerves, which means preganglionic sympathectomy of the internal male genital organs, was studied in rats with respect to return of spermatozoa in the ejaculate and fecundity. The observation period was two months.
