Abstract Blue-colored, partially polymerized 3BCMU and poly3BCMU COO(CH2)3 CH3] coated on filter papers were exposed to ozone. Poly3BCMU decolorized in seconds at 2 ppm concentration, while partially polymerized 3BCMU required several minutes for decolorization at 160 ppm concentration. The de-colorization is due to destruction of the conjugated backbone. The destruction appears to be a cooperative phenomenon, controlled by the diffusion of ozone. Use of polydiacetylenes as ozone indicators and dosimeters is suggested.
