Publisher Summary This chapter discusses six-membered rings with two or more heteroatoms with at least one phosphorus atom. It provides an overview of the history of phosphorus chemistry, referring to Michaelis, Arbuzow, Kosalopoff, Mann, and Maerkl. The chapter explores various approaches to phosphinines are . The question of the possible existence of phosphinines containing more than one heteroatom, with a Hiickel aromatic character, has provided the impetus for much experimental and theoretical activity in the field since 1966.The nomenclature is described in detail in the chapter. Ring systems with one, two, and three nitrogen atoms are elucidated. Ring systems with two phosphorus atoms, two phosphorus atoms and one, two, and three nitrogen atoms are analyzed in the appropriate place. Ring systems with three phosphorus atoms, Ring systems with three phosphorus and one, two, and three oxygen atoms are described. The applications for phosphinines are also discussed in the chapter. Theoretical studies and aromaticity are taken up. Experimental structural methods include information on X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. Azaphosphinines, Diazaphosphinines, triazaphosphinines, azadiphosphinines, diazadiphosphinines, triazadiphosphinines, dioxaphosphinanes, phenoxaphosphinines, diazatriphosphinines and triphospsphinines are included for elaboration in the chapter.
