The 95 th AATS Annual Meeting 2015 was held on April 25-29 at the Washington State Convention Center. The AATS, short for American Association for Thoracic Surgery, was founded in 1917 and has become an international organization of over 1,300 of the world’s foremost cardiothoracic surgeons representing 41 countries. AATS Annual Meeting has always been dedicated to continuing education as the top conference in the cardiothoracic field and has attracted cardiothoracic surgeons from across the world to attend.

Prof. Shijiang Zhang: the development of hybrid surgery in China

The People’s Hospital of Jiangsu Province is the largest tertiary general hospital in the province and has been shouldering the pivotal tasks of providing medical services to province-wide patients, mentoring medical practitioners, and advancing medical research. Prof. De-Min Li: what we expect from da Vinci robotic surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Nanjing General Hospital of Nanjing Military Command has a distinguished reputation among Chinese patients for decades. In recent years, the introduction of the “da Vinci” robot in the hospital has allowed the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery to carry out newer and more sophisticated surgeries and research projects. The 15th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC 2013) was expectedly held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Sydney, Australia from October 27 to October 30, 2013. The theme of the 2013 meeting is ‘Next-Generation Lung Cancer Care’, under which, the conference welcomed experts from all over the world to communicate their ideas on the better lung cancer care.

Prof. Walter McNicholas: sleep apnea—a disease calling for attention

Professor Walter McNicholas,MD, FRCPI, FRCPC, FCCP is Newman Clinical Research Professor at University College Dublin (UCD), Director of the Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Unit and Consultant Respiratory Physician at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. He is a medical graduate of UCD [1974] and has a long established track record in high level research and leadership (Figure 1). He is a leading international authority in translational research on the mechanisms and consequences of sleeprelated breathing disorders particularly sleep apnoea, and has held competitive grants from agencies such as the Health Research Board (Ireland) on a continuous basis for close to 30 years. His research interests include the pathophysiology, treatment and outcomes of sleep apnoea syndrome, the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of the disorder, basic cell and molecular mechanisms and consequences of intermittent hypoxia, in addition to sleep disturbances in COPD and other chronic respiratory disorders. He is also closely involved in the evaluation of novel ambulatory monitoring devices for sleep disorders. He is a past Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal, and has published over 170 papers in Pub-Med listed Journals (h-index in 2013 of 36), in addition to more than 30 book chapters, and has edited three textbooks on breathing disorders during sleep.
