Dissemination of research findings: A critical step

Gregory K. Fritz

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of scientific reports providing evidence for the effectiveness of a variety of mental health treatments for patients of all ages. A thorough review of the literature and the hundreds of well-designed randomized clinical trials evaluating various interventions could reasonably lead one to the conclusion that this is the golden age of evidence-based practice. But the sad fact is that only a tiny fraction of these studies actually influence what happens in routine clinical care.

Integrated care promotes professional communication

Gregory K. Fritz

Its self-evident that the more complicated a childs presenting problems are, the more critical it is to have the combined expertise of a multidisciplinary team applied to the case. Everyone is aware of how the tremendous expansion of all the sciences in recent decades means that no single individual or discipline can encompass all the knowledge relevant to helping a particular child. Complex developmental and behavioral problems have no single solution; rather, a coordinated multipronged approach best serves such children. What types of expertise are needed, how much professional time is available, who is paid for what service, etc. all must be considered in developing a comprehensive treatment plan. Obviously, collaboration among a team of professionals is the correct approach.

Physician-assisted suicide for child psychiatric patients?

Gregory K. Fritz

I recently read an incredible story about a 41-year-old California woman with advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrigs disease) who hosted a weekend party for her friends prior to her physician-assisted suicide. Guests who attended found it difficult, moving, and very important regarding their relationship with the woman. It seemed like a sad but beautiful event for the woman and for those of her friends who chose to participate. As one who has always been interested in palliative care and death with dignity, I was prompted to look into the status of physician-assisted suicide, especially where it stands with regard to the pediatric population.
