A strategy for combining metal oxides and metal-organic frameworks is proposed to design new materials for sensing volatile organic compounds, for the first time. The prepared ZnO@ZIF-CoZn core-sheath nanowire arrays show greatly enhanced performance not only on its selectivity but also on its response, recovery behavior, and working temperature.

A new bifunctional tetrazolate-5-carboxylate ligand has been prepared and employed in assembling 2-D Eu(III)–Zn(II) and Tb(III)–Zn(II) isostructural heterometallic MOFs with a (3,6)-connected kgd topology. The ligand in Tb3+ MOFs not only shows an antenna effect to transfer absorbed energy to Tb3+ centers to emit characteristic luminescence but also maintains good blue luminescent properties. Further, we have realized a rational design strategy to construct a series of Eu3+-doped Tb3+ MOFs emitting tunable three primary colors (RGB: red–green–blue) towards white light with high color rendering index and favorable correlated color temperature.

A color change: X-ray-induced photochromic species are rare and can be used for detection of X-rays. A highly robust X-ray-sensitive material with the discrete structure of a metal-organic complex has been found to show both soft and hard X-ray-induced photochromism at room temperature. A new ligand-to-ligand electron-transfer mechanism was proposed to elucidate this photochromic phenomenon.

Crystalline nanotube array would create great opportunity for novel electrical application. Herein we report the first example of a metal halide based crystalline nanotube array which is constructed from an unprecedented giant [Pb(II)18I54(I2)9] wheel cluster, as determined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The electrical properties of the single crystal were studied and the present compound shows typical semiconductivity and highly anisotropic conductivity.

Two new isostructural coordination compounds exhibit the rare difunctional properties of both electron-transfer (ET) photochromism and ET thermochromism, which are significantly affected by halogen atoms. The thermocrystallographic studies of the same single crystal have elucidated the electron-donating nature of the halogen atoms.

We investigate the impact of different derivatives of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane on the crystal structures of iodoplumbates by systematically increasing the size of the same organic amine, and present two new 1-D iodoplumbates. Optical studies reveal the semiconductor characteristics of all as-synthesized iodoplumbate hybrids.

A room-temperature solution phase reaction was developed to synthesize a covalent organic framework (COF) for the first time. The synthesized azodioxy-linked porphyrin-based COF (POR-COF) possesses a 2D chess board-like structure in the ab-plane and a 1D channel with an open-window size of around 1.9 nm along the c-axis in the modeled crystal structure. The electrical conductivity of POR-COF increases by more than 3 orders of magnitude through I2 doping. The photoconductivity of the I2-doped COF material was also studied firstly. POR-COF shows interesting doping-enhanced photo-current generation.

A novel inorganic–organic hybrid (H2DAB)(Pb2I6)·2H2O, is employed as a new nitrite detection reagent with extremely high sensitivity and selectivity, in which the organic component features dual functions that afford a self-supplied acidic environment and act as a reagent for spectrophotometrically detecting nitrite anions. This new nitrite detection reagent effectively simplifies the test procedure and can be used to qualitatively distinguish nitrites with the naked eye in rural and remote areas.

A novel inorganic–organic hybrid [Cu(2,2′-bipy)2I]2n(PbI3)2n·nDMF·nH2O (1), which exhibits diplex single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, can transform to a guest molecule released compound [Cu(2,2′-bipy)2I]n(PbI3)n (1a) by thermal induction, or to both a guest molecule released and ligand exchanged compound [Cu(2,2′-bipy)3]n(Pb2I6)n (1b) by solvent induction.

Two fluorescent cadmium complexes, [HL][CdCl2(H2O)2] (1) and [HL][CdBr2(H2O)2] (2) (HL = N-succinopyridine), have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 contains a unique μ2-Cl bridged neutral 2D inorganic layer, which is further connected to isolated HL molecules by hydrogen bonds forming a hamburger-like OIO 2D supramolecular architecture. Complex 2 features a 3D supramolecular network assembly from 1D inorganic chains and discrete organic molecules through hydrogen bonds. Thermogravimetric, luminescent properties and theoretical calculations of 1 and 2 are also discussed. Moreover, UV-to-Vis tunable emissions for N-succinopyridine and 1 as well as blue-to-green tunable emission for 2 are observed.
