Abstract. This paper models the human capital formation in the Italian university and utilizes a measure of technical efficiency to estimate the output-efficiency of human capital formation in the University of Florence, by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) on a selected set of inputs and outputs. It uses the Program Evaluation (PE) procedure as well, in an attempt to attribute shares of the variation in efficiency to factors that are beyond the control and factors that are under the control of the graduates and faculties.

The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) are used in current economic systems to measure inflation. When constructing CPIs, however, official institutions have systematically overlooked the spatial dimension of elementary prices. Ignoring the fact that prices are collected at geographical locations implicitly implies considering prices as spatially independent, when in fact they are not. To solve this problem, this article proposes to weight basic price data by taking into account the spatial correlation they display. The weighted geometric and arithmetic means suggested generalize and improve the simple geometric and arithmetic means currently in use.

This papers deals with the problem of the time-space integration of the CPIs produced in the Euro-zone through the integration of the baskets for time and space price collection. After revising and discussing the existing system and its historical background, the authors propose a simplified approach that allows cross-region and cross-country time-space CPIs integration in a harmonized framework and results in a gain of efficiency and effectiveness and in cost and time saving.

In inter-household welfare comparisons, equivalence scales have been traditionally used as a tool for making comparisons among households with different composition, as well as to assess the cost of additional household components, with focus on cost of children. No reference has been explicitly made to the time/space dimensions, except the time one implicit in the inter-temporal approach. No attention has been paid so far to a possible role of them in space framework. Based on previous works by the author and associate, this paper investigates the use of equivalence scales as inter-household income spatial deflators, through a geographically, socio-economically and demographically extended PS-GAIDS model named PGSEDS-GAIDS that allows to account not only for space, but also for social, economic and demographic variables other than number and age of additional components. By using the Italian Household Budget Survey micro-data base, evidence on Italian inter-regional household comparisons are obtained and discussed, showing that, despite several problems remain open and more than one remark can be made, it may be worth using equivalence scales in space domain.

Against the backdrop of today’s climate of economic globalization and the rapid development of information, this timely book explores the complex concept of competitiveness between cities. The expert contributors illustrate that innovation is a prerequisite for increasing urban competitiveness, and highlight the various ways that urban innovation-based competitiveness can be approached.
