Analysis of the Yimin-Fengtun 500KV TCSC on the Northeast China Power System

Liang Jun; Guo Jianbo; Zhou Xiaoxin

Abstract A TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation) is proposed to be installed in the Yimin-Fengtun 500kV system at the Fengtun site on the Northeast China power system which will be the first 500kV series compensation of China. In this paper, amount of simulations are made to acquire characteristics of steady state and transient state of studied system. A comparison of system feature with the TCSC and fixed compensation is also given. An important point in the paper is about control strategy of the TCSC and influence of characteristics and parameters of the TCSC equipment on power system. It can be indicated that the TCSC can greatly improve the performance of power system and characteristics of the TCSC equipment must be deeply studied so as to be fully used to acquire more benefit.

Probabilistic Security Evaluation of Bulk Power System Considering Cascading Outages

Song Yunting; He Hailei; Zhang Dongxia; Guo Jianbo

This paper proposed an overall framework of probabilistic security evaluation considering cascading outages for bulk power system based on enumeration approach, which takes into account several uncertainty factors in power system. The quantitative probabilistic security indices obtained by this approach can reflect power system stability and security clearly. A case study of the IEEE-RTS test system is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm. The proposed method adopts the enumeration approach is a valuable and powerful tool for power system planning, and it makes research results of reliability evaluation become more practical in the competitive market environment. The results presented are helpful to electric power utilities in the decision making process at the planning stage.

Modeling of static synchronous series compensator in Newton power flow calculation in PSASP

Zhao Jianjun; Guo Jianbo; Zhou Xiaoxin

This paper investigated a model of SSSC in power flow calculation which considering characteristic of injected voltage of SSSC and the control constraints of inverter in Newton power flow analysis in PSASP (Power system analysis software package). The key problem for developing a suitable model of SSSC for power system and power flow calculation in bulk power grid is resolved. The UD (User-defined model) and UPI (User program interface) function of PSASP have been used for generating the controllable injection voltage. The modeling could provide both capacitive and inductive compensation through regulating phase angle of injection voltage. The analysis results based on EPRI-7 system are presented to demonstrate the performance of SSSC power flow model and the satisfactory steady state performance also shown the effective regulation of SSSC

Guide for voltage regulation and reactive power compensation at 1000kV AC and above with IEEE P1860 standard

Ma Shicong; Guo Jianbo; He Qing; Zhang Jian; Du Mian; Yang Zhao

There is multi voltage levels including UHV and complex operation for wide-area power transmission for future power grid. The voltage regulation and reactive power compensation are more dependent on the cooperation of devices and methods in each voltage levels including UHV, EHV and lower voltage level. Reasonable configuration can save cost and improve operation efficiency. The configuration principle and regulation methods which are from the studies on IEEE P1860 Standard were proposed in this paper. And some examples for regulation process and compensation configuration were shown as well.

Security and stability study of planning UHVAC/DC hybrid transmission system

Zhou Jun; Guo Jianbo; Guo Qiang; Zhu Yiying

This paper presents the security and stability study of planning UHVAC/DC hybrid transmission system using digital and analog hybrid real-time simulation. The building of digital electromagnetic transient and physical simulation models of planning UHVAC/DC power grid was introduced, then detailed simulation of UHV power backbone was presented. The study include as following: Single Fault, Critical failure of ac system, pole\bipolar emergency outage of dc system. Simulation results show that: Ac power system failure will lead power fluctuation at UHVAC transmission channels, but the system will restore stable operation after ac fault was cleared. When dc system occurs polar emergency outage, planning UHV system was stable, but for bipolar emergency outage, it need trip off generators at sending system to ensure the system stability. 2015 UHV power backbone meet the requirements of Guidelines for Power System Stability, this network structure is feasible.

Self-organized Criticality and Its Application in Power System Collapse Prevention

Yu Qun; Guo Jianbo

The state electric power transmission networks of china is experiencing rapid changes and will continue to be operated closer to a stressed condition in which there is substantial risk of cascading outages and blackouts. Major cascading disturbances, or blackouts of these transmission systems can obviously cause severe damage to our society. Based on the concept of self-organized criticality (SOC) and fractal and by analyzing power system blackouts in China from 1981 to 2002, the characters of SOC of domestic power system blackouts are revealed, and the scale-frequency models for blackouts occurred in nationwide power grid are constructed. For these statistics, it strongly suggests that SOC dynamics may play an important role in the global complex dynamics of power systems.

The grounding design of MMC-UPFC

Cui Fubo; Jing Ping; Pan Bing; Guo Jianbo; Song Jieying; Chen Yuxin

Based on the functional requirement for MMC-UPFC, 3 grounding proposals were brought up i.e. interface-transformer valve side star connected grounding, AC side large inductance grounding and AC side zig-zag transformer grounding. Also, the winding connection form of converter transformer and the grounding impedance of 3 grounding methods were investigated. Through the simulation and analysis of the fault characteristics of internal ac bus and dc bus fault, the relationship between grounding impedance and internal electrical quantities of valve was derived. With considerations of the fault characteristics of 3 grounding methods and domestic technology ability, the conclusion that interface-transformer valve side star connected grounding is more advantageous in MMC-UPFC was derived.

Study on grouping technology of Redox Flow Battery

Li Bei; Guo Jianbo; Lai Xiaokang; Hui Dong

The group technology, which leads battery cell combined in series-parallel ways scientifically, is the basis of large scale application of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Especially for VRB, as it holds a unique structure of hydraulic interconnection pipe system, the combination of electrical connection and hydraulic connection should be more challenging to the group technology. On the basis of experimental study of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRB), the reliability, efficiency and economic analysis of battery group technology are discussed from the viewpoint of engineering application in this paper.

Technical Measures of Transferring Capability Improvement in Power System

Guo Jianbo

This paper introduces the application and investigation of technical measures for improving power transmission capability in China. These measures include investigating the power system dynamic characteristic and load models by means of field tests, adopting stability control measures such as PSS, application of SVC, FSC and TCSC in network, field measurement and management of generators and so on. Also presents the first TCSC project in China with home-made devices. This project enhances transmission capability with an increase about 33% and improves the damping characteristic of power system effectively
