In this research, changes of testosterone hormone in the blood serum of 9 male (3 of age 2 and 6 of age 4) White goats have been studied for a duration of one year. Analyses performed show that the general monthly averages of the testosterone hormone of the male White goats in the period of 12 months starting in January were (2.11±0.73), (2.22±0.52), (2.44±0.59), (2.10±0.41), (2.35±1.00), (3.42±1.48), (4.77±1.32), (5.61±1.40), (7.91±1.24), (10.84±1.59), (7.82±1.60), and (2.63±0.61) ng mL−1, respectively (P<0.05). The effect of the age factor on the testosterone production in White goats (age 2 and 4) was generally significant (P<0.05) for differences among months in each age group, but not significant for differences between age groups in each month. The testosterone hormone levels of male White goats encountered significant changes (P<0.05) with respect to the season.

Annual change of Prolactin and growth hormone in Angora goats

Erkan Pehlivan; Hüseyin Polat; Gürsel Dellal

Abstract In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between concentrations of Prolactin (PRL) and Growth hormone (GH) and seasonal factors such as temperature and photoperiod for one year in 13 heads (6 female and 7 male) of 1.5 years old Angora goat. For this purpose, to determine hormones concentrations, blood samples were taken from jugular vein of each goat in every month for one year. Hormones analyses in the serum were performed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) method. Monthly climatic values and photoperiod of the period during which the experiment was conducted, were obtained from the Turkish State Meteorological Service. In the study, in order to determine any possible differences in the observed hormones concentrations with respect to genders and months, repeated measures ANOVA analyses was performed. As a result of statistical analysis, there were significant differences among the (p < 0.01) and genders (p < 0.05) for GH concentrations, while there were significant interaction (p < 0.01) of gender x month for PRL concentrations. As a result of the study, it was determined that the PRL releases were seasonally dependent and significantly affected by the seasonal changes of photoperiod and temperature, while GH was not seasonally dependent in Angora goats.

Ankara (Angora) goat, mentioned in association with the name of Ankara city in literature, is an important cultural heritage of Ankara. Although some animals, such as Gemlik horse, Kangal sheep, Kars Turkish shepherd dog, Turkish hound have registered geographical indication, Ankara (Angora) goat is not studied within the scope of geographical indications. As the other mentioned animals, Ankara goat is also one of the indigenous genetic resources of Turkey. Mohair is a special animal fiber obtained from Angora goat. Thus, it has the potential to have a geographical indication. Hence, the use of mohair in industrial and traditional crafts is important for the sustainability of cultural heritage. In this paper, Turkish handicraft items which made from fibers and registered geographical indications have been analyzed. Mohair was studied within the scope of geographical indication and focused on the significance of the use of industrial and traditional crafts.
