Abstract Heat generation and heat flow were determined for the Bohus granite massif in western Sweden. This is the start of a major program concerning geothermal energy in Sweden. Neutron activation analyses, temperature measurements, thermal conductivity measurements have been carried out. As was expected the result, 76 mW m −2 , shows that even old Precambrian shields locally exhibit much higher values than normal.

Abstract Differences in structural overprinting of rocks east and west of a Sveconorwegian shear zone, the Mylonite Zone, Varmland County, SW Sweden, reveal that this part of the Southwest Scandinavian Domain should be subdivided into different structural domains. We here distinguish the Southwest Scandinavian Domain of eastern Varmland to be affected by Sveconorwegian ductile deformation mainly, where the most prominent structural elements are a foliation and mineral lineations, one of which is associated with open, roughly upright, N–S trending folds. Rocks of western Varmland have a pre-Sveconorwegian deformation history characterized by stromatic veining and isoclinal folding. Subsequent Sveconorwegian thrusting overprints these structures in localised shear zones. One of these is the Mylonite Zone, which roughly marks the eastern border of Gothian folding in this area.

Preliminary investigations of the geothermal energy potential in Sweden are being carried out in crystalline rocks of Precambrian age, as well as in the Triassic Buntsandstone. The geothermal potential of fracture zones is also being investigated. Different methods for prospecting have been tried and compared.

Abstract This paper embraces a study of a lineament in southwestern Sweden. The character of the lineament and its possibilities to be used as a geothermal extraction system have been evaluated. From this study it is evident that a low temperature area could be used for geotthermal heat extraction if suitable physical and economic conditions are obtained.
