Chave ilustrada para identificação dos camarões dendrobranchiata do litoral norte do estado de São Paulo, Brasil

Rogério Caetano da Costa; Adilson Fransozo; Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo; Fúlvio Aurélio de Morais Freire

This study aimed to provide an illustrated identification key to distinguish Dendrobranchiata marine shrimps which, occur in the littoral north Sao Paulo State as deep as to 40m. A total of 13 species were captured using a shrimp fishery boat with two double-rig nets. Monthly trawlings were carried out from 1995 to 2000 in the region of Ubatuba, SP. This key includes the commercial value of species such as the penaeids Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, F. paulensis, Litopenaeus schmitti, Artemesia longinaris and the solenocerids Pleoticus muelleri. In addition to these species, shrimps that are not of commercial interest were also include such as Rimapenaeus constrictus, Acetes americanus, Peisos petrunkevitchi and the sicionids Sicyonia dorsalis, S. typica, S. laevigata and S. parri. The key proposed here might facilitate the identification of Dendrobranchiata shrimps by a variety of users, including scientific researchers as well as people responsible for making the laws that regulate fisheries, principally in the protection period.

Discovery of the first known benthic invasive species in the Southern Ocean: the North Atlantic spider crab Hyas araneus found in the Antarctic Peninsula

Marcos Tavares; Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo

The Southern Ocean around Antarctica is no longer free from invasive marine species. The North Atlantic spider crab Hyas araneus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Majidae) has been recorded for the first time from the Antarctic Peninsula. Isolated for at least 25 million years, the endemic Antarctic Southern Ocean marine fauna is now being exposed to human-mediated influx of exotic species. Invasive species and polar warming combined can foster the probability of arrival and colonization by non-indigenous species, with unpredictable consequences for the Antarctic marine biota.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the composition of Majoidea crabs inhabiting the infralittoral rocky/sandy bottom of Anchieta Island (Ubatuba), from north coast of Sao Paulo State. Crabs were collected monthly during 1999 and 2000 by using SCUBA and cages. The occurrence of eight species of majoids (Epialtus brasiliensis, Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax braziliensis, Mithrax hispidus, Mithrax tortugae, Pelia rotunda, Pitho lherminieri and Stenorhynchus seticornis) was registered and corresponded to 24.2% of total of majid crabs recorded in the coast of Sao Paulo State. Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax tortugae and Stenorhynchus seticornis were most abundant in samples and constituted populations that belonged to the brachyuran community of the studied area. The taxocoenosis of the area was dominated by M. forceps (57.62%). The occurrence of Mithrax braziliensis in the present study enlarged its south distribution to the Sao Paulo State.

A família Dromiidae de Haan no litoral brasileiro, com descrição de uma nova espécie (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura)

Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo; Oswaldo Campos Jr

The family Dromiidae, erected by De Haan in the past century, is formed by primitive crabs which are distributed in the tropical and temperate waters of the main oceans. Until now, four species of the family have been recognized from the Brazilian coast: Dromia erythropus (G. Edwards), Cryptodromiopsis antillensis (Stimpson), Hypoconcha arcuata Stimpson and H. parasitica (Linnaeus). A fifth species, Dromia gouveai sp.n., is herein described and illustrated.

A ocorrência, no litoral brasileiro, de um Portunidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura), originário do Indo-Pacífico

Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo

The portunid Scylla serrata, widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, is reported for the first time from the Southwestern Atlantic. A female specimen was captured at Peruibe, State of Sao Paulo, by a fishing boat, at a depth of approximately 15 m. A detailed description of the specimens is given, with data on the geographical distribution of the species, and a discussion of the taxonomic status of the genus.

Primeira ocorrência de Polybius navigator (Herbst) (Decapoda, Brachyura, Portunidae) no Atlântico ocidental

Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo; Thais Brandini Crivelaro

Among the portunid crabs collected during the Ilha Grande Project (1966-1969), one specimen of Polybius navigator (Herbst, 1794) was found. This species formerly known from the Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adriatic and Black Seas is redescribed, illustrated and comments on the new status of the genus is done. It is the first record of this species for the Brazilian coast and Western Atlantic.

Rediscovery of Holothuriophilus tomentosus (Ortmann) comb. nov. (Crustacea, Brachyura, Pinnotheridae) in the Brazilian coast

Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo; Guisla Boehs

Two males and one female of Holothuriophilus tomentosus (Ortmann, 1894) comb. nov. were collected in Enseada de Ratones, Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Since its original description, as Pinnaxodes tomentosus, this species has only been collected recently, from the Pontal do Daniela, also in Florianopolis. The previously unknown male is described and the female is redescribed herein. The characteristics of this material lead us to believe that Pinnaxodes tomentosus should be transferred to the genus Holothuriophilus Nauk, 1880.

Espécies do gênero Munida Leach (Crustacea, Decapoda, Galatheidae) coletadas entre Torres (Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil) e Maldonado (Uruguai) pelo Programa Rio Grande do Sul (PRS I-II, GEDIP)

Gustavo A.S. de Melo-Filho; Gustavo Augusto Schmidt de Melo

The project PRS-GEDIP was carried out in the Rio Grande do Sul coast, with some few stations off Maldonado (Uruguay), by means of a convention between Instituto Oceanografico USP (IOUSP) and the Grupo Executivo do Desenvolvimento da Industria da Pesca (GEDIP) of Rio Grande do Sul. The purpose of this project was the acquisition of data in order to have a better biotic and abiotic characterization of the southern Brazilian coast. Among the Galatheidae, about 1200 specimens of the genus Munida Leach, 1820 were collected, including five species as follows: Munida flinti Benedict, 1902; M. forceps A. Milne Edwards, 1880; M. iris A. Milne Edwards, 1880; M. irrasa A. Milne Edwards. 1880 and M. longipes A. Milne Edwards, 1880. The description, material examined, remarks and maps of the stations where each species was collected are done.
