Partial resistance to fruit necrosis associated to Colletotrichum spp. among arabic coffee genotypes

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistanc e to fruit necrosis associated to Colletotrichum spp. in Coffea arabica L.. Twenty-two arabic coffee genotypes were perfor med in a randomized block design, with three replications and ten plants per plot. They were eva luated for the variables fruit necrosis, luminosity index inside of the plant canopy and fruits per productive nodes of the plants. There was genetic variability for the resistance to fruit necrosis. Different partial resistance levels, varying from highly susceptible (score = 3.89) to moderately resistant (score = 1.77) were observed. The genotyp es that presented moderate resistance were the cult ivars IPR100, IPR-103, IPR-105 and IPR-108 and the coffee se lection IAPAR-00023.

The plant breeding program at IAPAR started in 1972, soon after its foundation, and has as main objective the development of superior cultivars with high yield potential, genetic resistance to major biotic and abiotic adverse factors and good nutritional and technological quality. Over these forty years, IAPAR has made available to farmers 184 cultivars of different species, resulting in an increase in the productivity, greater availability of food, decrease in environmental impacts, addition of value to agricultural properties and life improvement of farmers and consumers. Thus, the institution fulfills its mission of generating technology, contributing to the development of agriculture in Parana and in other parts of Brazil, since many of the cultivars developed are used in different regions of the country.

Coffee Berry Borer Resistance in Coffee Genotypes

The aim of this study was to evaluate the coffee germplasm of the Parana Agronomic Institute (IAPAR) for resistance to the coffee-berry-borer. Preliminary field evaluation was performed in August 2004 and the fruits of less damaged genotypes in the field were evaluated under controlled condition with obligated and free choice experiments established in a randomized complete design with three replications. The genotypes were evaluated fifteen days after infestation with one borer per fruit in Petri dishes. The data were analyzed by the Scott-Knott means test at 1 % and by the χ2 test. Statistical analysis indicated that Coffea kapakata, Psilanthus bengalensis, C. eugenioides and genotypes with C. eugenioides genes were resistant. These genotypes presented low frequency of bored grains. C. eugenioides and C. kapakata could present resistance at epicarp level but not in the grain. P. bengalensis could present resistance also in the grains.

Seleção para a resistência à ferrugem em progênies das cultivares de café IPR 99 e IPR 107

ABSTRACT SELECTION FOR RESISTANCE TO RUST IN PROGENIES OF COFFEE CULTIVARS IPR 99 AND IPR 107 All plants of the coffee cultivars IPR 99 (“Sarchimor”) and IPR 107 (‘IAPAR 59’ x ‘Mundo Novo IAC 376-4’) were resistant to rust ( Hemileia vastatrix ) in the past. Currently, susceptible plants were observed in the two cultivars due to the breakdown of resistance by new rust races. The aims of this study were: a) to identify coffee ( Coffea arabica L.) progenies of the two cultivars with resistance to rust; b) to identify progenies with incomplete resistance; c) to investigate the efficiency of test-crosses for selection from these cultivars. Evaluation for field resistance was carried out in adult plants subjected to natural infection by the local leaf rust population at IAPAR. Twenty-three test-crosses with F 3 progenies of ‘IPR 107’ and five with F 4 progenies of ‘IPR 99’ were evaluated. Moreover, 11 F 4 progenies of ‘IPR 107’ and five F 5 progenies of ‘IPR 99’ derived from self pollinations were evaluated. Selection of Arabic coffee progenies with rust resistance

RESUMO - O objetivo desse estudo foi selecionar progenies de cafe produtivas e com resistencia a ferrugem em dois locais do Estado do Parana (Brasil). Os experimentos de campo foram instalados no delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso nos municipio de Itaguaje e Congonhinhas. Foram avaliadas as caracteristicas producao, vigor vegetativo e resistencia a ferrugem em nove progenies de cafe arabica e em tres cultivares padroes. Varios genotipos derivados do “Sarchimor” e do “Catucai” apresentaram plantas suscetiveis. Tres cafeeiros do germoplasma Sarchimor e uma progenie “F6 de Catuai x (Catuai x cafeeiro da serie BA-10)” foram selecionados para avanco de geracao e tem potencial para se tornarem novas cultivares, pois apresentaram producao maior que ‘IAPAR 59’ e ‘Tupi IAC 1669-33’ e muitas plantas apresentaram resistencia completa a ferrugem.

Reaction of Arabica coffee progenies derivative from Icatu to Meloidogyne paranaensis

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a reacao ao nematoide Meloidogyne paranaensis em progenies de cafe arabica derivadas do Icatu. O experimento foi conduzido em telado, no Instituto Agronomico do Parana (IAPAR), em Londrina, Parana, Brasil. Mudas com tres a quatro pares de folhas foram inoculadas com 5.000 ovos e juvenis de segundo estadio (J2) de Meloidogyne paranaensis. Foram avaliadas quatro progenies F4 de HN 87609 derivadas de ‘Icatu H4782-7-925’. Como padroes de suscetibilidade e resistencia, foram utilizados, respectivamente, Coffea arabica cv. Catuai Vermelho IAC 81 e C. arabica cv. IPR 100. O experimento foi instalado em blocos casualizados com 14 repeticoes e uma planta por parcela. As avaliacoes foram efetuadas 120 dias apos a inoculacao. Foram avaliados o numero de ovos e J2 por gramas de raiz (Nematoides∙g–1) e o fator de reproducao (FR). Para classificar os niveis de resistencia das progenies, foi utilizado o indice de suscetibilidade do hospedeiro (ISH). De acordo com Nematoides∙g–1, as progenies IAPAR 12232 e IAPAR 12231 nao diferiram estatisticamente do padrao resistente ‘IPR 100’. Todas as progenies F4 de HN 87609 foram altamente resistentes pelo ISH e apresentaram 100% das plantas classificadas como altamente resistentes ou resistentes. Portanto, a resistencia a M. paranaensis esta condicao homozigotica.

Associação de Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae com algumas características agronômicas em cafeeiros F2 segregantes para o gene erecta

A bacteriose causada pela Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae provoca grandes prejuizos em algumas regioes da cafeicultura brasileira, como Parana, Sao Paulo e Minas Gerais, principalmente em lavouras novas, podadas e expostas ao vento. Com este trabalho, objetivou-se estudar nas plantas F2 do cruzamento entre os genotipos IAPAR-59 e Catuai Erecta a associacao entre as caracteristicas vigor vegetativo e ângulos de insercao das ramificacoes plagiotropicas sobre a intensidade de ocorrencia da bacteriose. Avaliaram-se, em outubro de 2001, 316 plantas F2 plantadas no IAPAR de Londrina em outubro de 1998. A escala de notas de avaliacao da incidencia de bacteriose adotada foi de 1 a 5, sendo 1 = plantas sem lesao e 5 = plantas com muitas lesoes. As notas de vigor vegetativo adotadas foram de 1 a 5, sendo 1 para folhas de coloracao verde-claras e 5 para folhas verdeescuras. Para a insercao dos ramos plagiotropicos sobre os ortotropicos, as notas variaram de 1 a 3, sendo 1 = normal (45 a 70o), 2 = semi-ereta (25 a 40o) e 3 = ereta (5 a 20o). Estimou-se o coeficiente de correlacao de Pearson para verificar a associacao entre as caracteristicas vigor vegetativo e do ângulo de insercao das ramificacoes plagiotropicas com a intensidade de ocorrencia da bacteriose nos cafeeiros. A correlacao estimada entre a intensidade da bacteriose com o ângulo de insercao dos ramos plagiotropicos foi de r = + 0,2087**. Nao houve correlacao significativa entre a bacteriose e o vigor vegetativo. Assim, plantas com ramificacao plagiotropica ereta sao predispostas a uma maior incidencia de bacteriose.

First report of mixed infection by Pseudomonas syringae pathovars garcae and tabaci on coffee plantations

ABSTRACT: The bacterial-halo-blight ( Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae ) is disseminated by the main coffee areas in the producing states of Brazil. On the other hand, the disease bacterial-leaf-spot ( Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci ) was reported only once in coffee seedlings in a sample collected in the State of Sao Paulo.
