Spatial variations of the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi (Marini, 1933)) spawning shoals in the Patagonian area during a reproductive season

Displacements of Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi shoals in the spawning area of Patagonia before and during a reproductive season were analyzed. In particular, monthly changes in fish density, sex composition, size structure and spawning location were described for this stock. During October?November, hake shoals moved from deeper waters to the coast at about 44°S, where spawning took place in December. During January the main reproductive aggregations stayed near the coast (50 m depth) but displaced to the southern area (45°S); in February spawning activity diminished and spent females began to return to deeper waters. In general, this process was first completed by young spawners (35?45 cm TL), which have a breeding season shorter than the old females. We observed that males arrived at the spawning area first and remained there for a longer period than females. During the reproductive period skewed sex ratios in different sampling sites were observed. These differences in sex composition were attributable to: 1) local segregation produced by the reproductive behavior of hake, in which males form groups with a single female, and 2) migration of spent females to deeper waters, which causes male-biased samplings in coastal areas.

Spawning biomass of Argentine anchovy ( Engraulis anchoita ) from 1996 to 2004 using the Daily Egg Production Method

The Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) was used to compute spawning biomass of Engraulis anchoita off Argentina. Estimates of the daily egg production (P o ) for the northern stock ranged from 594 to 936 eggs m ―2 , whereas the annual means of the Patagonian stock ranged from 1 8 5 to 6 05 eggs m ―2 . The mean values estimated for the Argentine anchovy DEPM parameters were characterized by inter-annual differences greater than inter-regional differences with the exception of P o . For the northern population, the estimates of mean weight of mature females ranged from 15 to 2 6 g, the relative batch fecundity from 414 to 6 00 eggs g ― 1 , the spawningfrequency (S) from 0.078 to 0.179, and the females ratio from 0.519 to 0.622 of the spawning stock. The estimates corresponding to the Patagonian stock were similar being 15 to 24 g, 418 to 5 8 3 eggs g ― , 0.079 to 0.244, and 0.394 to 0.590, respectively. The annual estimates of the spawning biomass for the northern and Patagonian populations ranged between 1.6―3.5 and 0.3―1.5 million metric tons, respectively. A weakness in the application of DEPM was the low precision in the estimation of the daily egg production and the spawning fraction. Alternative methodologies to increase the precision of P o and S are discussed. In spite of the high variance of the spawning biomass estimates, the use of DEPM offers valuable information to adjust acoustic estimates and provides time series of anchovy population size and biological parameters for basic research.

Comparative reproductive biology of Sciaenidae family species in the Río de la Plata and Buenos Aires Coastal Zone, Argentina

A comparative analysis on various aspects of the reproductive biology of 7 Sciaenidae family species was done. In addition the reproductive parameters needed for stock assessment models were provided. The research covered the analysis of the duration of the breeding season and the estimation of reproductive variables such as size at maturity, fecundity and spawning frequency. When all species were considered together, some aspects of reproduction were similar, regarding the reproductive strategy; all species are batch spawners with indeterminate fecundity and an extensive reproductive season (approximately six months) except for Pogonias cromis, which showed a more limited spawning season (three months). With regard to reproductive potential, wide differences in fecundity values mainly due to the different sizes attained by each species were observed (range in batch fecundity values between 5000 and 2,800,000 hydrated oocytes). However, when relative fecundity was compared, average values were generally similar, ranging approximately between 150 and 200 hydrated oocytes per female gram. Pogonias cromis is the exception within this group, because the mean relative fecundity ranged between 75 and 98 hydrated oocytes per ovary-free female gram. This difference may be a consequence of the greater oocyte size reached by P. cromis eggs (1100–1400 mm) compared to the rest of sciaenid analysed (750–900).

Spawning and fecundity of Jenyns's sprat, Ramnogaster arcuata, a winter spawner in the temperate waters of the Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina -Uruguay

The reproductive biology of the Jenynss sprat Ramnogaster arcuata in the Rio de la Plata area was studied using macroscopic and histological analysis of ovaries. Samples were collected during two research surveys carried out in June 1998 and June 1999. In addition monthly occurrences of this species from historical data were analysed. Jenynss sprat specimens were mainly observed in open waters of the estuary during winter months. Most of the females collected during June 1998 and 1999 were in the spawning stage. This pattern differs from fish that reproduce in the estuarine waters of the Rio de la Plata, which spawn during spring and summer. These results suggest that conditions of productivity and larval retention in the estuary also remain during winter months. This characteristic might be useful for R. arcuata larvae in avoiding competition with other estuarine spawners. Jenynss sprat is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity. A preliminary estimate of spawning frequency (N = 220) indicated a daily percentage of females with postovulatory follicles of 17.35%, which suggests that this species spawns on average once every six days. Batch fecundity, estimated from counts of hydrated oocytesfrom 40 females, ranged from 669 to 2026 hydrated oocytes in 1998 and from 570 to 1830 hydrated oocytes in 1999. Batch fecundity was fitted to a linear function of total body weight (without ovary) in 1999. Mean relative fecundity was 234 hydrated oocytes per female gram (ovary free) in 1998 and 155 hydrated oocytes per female gram (ovary free) in 1999, and no significant relationship was observed between this parameter and female size. The dry weight of 100 hydrated oocytes ranged between 3.9 and 6.3 mg, these values being significantly higher than those estimated for other species of the Rio de la Plata estuary.

Uterine dynamics of the southern eagle ray Myliobatis goodei (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatidae) from the southwest Atlantic Ocean

Abstract Uterine layer changes and their relationship with the reproductive cycle were analyzed for the southern eagle ray Myliobatis goodei (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatidae), based on histological and histometric studies. The specimens were collected from bottom-trawl surveys conducted in the coastal southwest Atlantic ecosystem between latitude 34 and 42°S. Oviduct samples were removed and fixed in 10% buffered formalin until processing for histological analysis. Both oviducts are developed in mature females, but only the left is functional. After ovulation, the size of the right posterior oviduct decreases and the left develops into a complex uterus that occupies almost the entire coelomic cavity. This uterus undergoes successive morphological and functional changes related to reproductive stages. Mucosa was characterized by temporal villous extensions or trophonemata with high variability depending on reproductive events. Invaginations or crypts associated with presumably lipid secretion (histotrophe) were observed between the trophonematum bases. The muscular layer develops into a complex muscular-vascular-conjunctive structure. The nutrition of early-gestation embryos is lecithotrophic and later they receive nutrients from the yolk sac and histotrophe. After yolk depletion, embryos become entirely dependent on histotrophe. Uterolactation, presumptive water imbibition of the muscular layer, and uterine hypertrophy observed in this study reinforce the “similarities” between Myliobatiformes and mammals.

Maternal effects on fecundity and egg quality of the Patagonian stock of Argentine Hake (Merluccius hubbsi)

The influences of age, size, and condition of spawning females on fecundity and oocyte quality were analyzed for the Patagonian stock of Argentine Hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Samples of mature females were collected in the spawning area as part of 2 research surveys conducted in January 2010 and 2011, during the peak of the reproductive season. Batch fecundity (BF) ranged between 40,500 (29 cm total length [TL]) and 2,550,000 (95 cm TL) hydrated oocytes, and was positively correlated with TL, gutted weight, age, hepatosomatic index (HSI), and the relative condition factor (Kn). Relative fecundity ranged between 85 and 1040 hydrated oocytes g–1 and showed significant positive relationships with gutted weight, HSI, and Kn; however, coefficients of determination were low for all regressions. Dry weights of samples of 100 hydrated oocytes ranged between 1.8 and 3.95 mg and were positively correlated with all variables analyzed, including batch and relative fecundity. Multiple regression models created with data of the morphophysiological characteristics of females supported maternal influences on fecundity and egg weights. Within the studied size range (29–95 cm TL), larger individuals had better somatic and egg condition, mainly revealed by higher HSI and hydrated oocytes with larger oil droplets (275.71μm [standard error 1.49]). These results were associated with the higher feeding activity of larger females during the spawning season in comparison with the feeding activity of young individuals (<5 years old); the better nutritional state of larger females, assumed to result from more feeding, was conducive to greater production of high-quality eggs.

Morphological and histochemical characteristics of the epithelium of ovarian lamellae of Genypterus blacodes (Schneider, 1801)

The physiological significance of the glycoproteins (GPs) secreted by the epithelium of ovarian lamellae is discussed in reference to the reproductive biology of G. blacodes. Histochemical procedures for localising and characterising GPs were used to determine the cytoplasmic components of cells of the epithelium that covers the ovarian lamellae of pink cuskeel, Genypterus blacodes (Schneider, 1801) (Pisces, Ophidiidae), during spawning. This species is one of the most valuable demersal fish resources in the Argentine Sea, mainly due its large size and flesh quality. GPs with oxidizable vicinal diol groups, sialic acid with or without O-acyl substituents, O-acyl sugars, neutral sugars and GPs with carboxyl and sulphate groups were detected. Light microscope examination showed morphological changes in the epithelium of ovarian lamellae during the spawning season, associated with a secretory activity of mucus. Optical density studies revealed the presence of polyploid cells encompassing those morphological changes. Results of the present study suggest that the epithelium of ovarian lamellae of G. blacodes performs a secretory role, which is intensified during ovarian maturity, suggesting that G. blacodes could release masses of eggs enveloped in mucus.

News about the reproductive ecology of the southern conger eel Conger orbignianus

Congrids inhabit the warm and temperate seas of the world, from the coastline to the slope of various continents. Many of its species are much valued by commercial and artisan fishing; nevertheless, at world level, there is great ignorance about the life cycle of the members of this genus. Some species of the genus, such as those from the North Atlantic, appear to be semelparous, for they cease feeding, decalcify, loose their teeth and migrate to deep waters to spawn. Specimens of the southern conger eel Conger orbignianus were examined for the purpose of learning about their biology in waters of the western South Atlantic. Histological sections were analysed from ovaries of coastal conger specimens from the North Argentina coastal littoral, the Argentine Sea deep waters, and the giant congers from southern Brazil. Two oocitary generations have been observed in coastal females typical of total spawners, with a previtellogenetic batch that does not reach maturity, and a vitellogenetic batch that does it together with its size, completely surrounded by adipose tissue. The ovaries of fish captured in deep waters occupied the whole abdominal cavity, with scarce adipose tissue and degraded body. The giant congers from southern Brazil were captured in very deep waters, healthy, with few atretic oocytes and abundant adipose tissue. Evidence of semelparity was found in the southern conger eel; the asistosis stage, the body degradation during the reproductive migration and gigantism might be common attributes in other species of the genus.

The reproductive biology of Pinguipes brasilianus Cuvier, 1829 (Osteichthyes: Pinguipedidae) in temperate rocky reefs of Argentina

Pinguipes brasilianus is a conspicuous and abundant rocky-reef fish inhabiting the Northern Patagonian gulfs of Argentina, Southwest Atlantic. This study describes its reproductive biology in this region. We made macroscopic and histological descriptions of the testis and ovary development, analyzed the evolution of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) in both sexes throughout the year, and estimated fecundity and length at 50% maturity for females. Pinguipes brasilianus is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity and an extended reproductive season, encompassing austral spring and summer. Low GSI values in males (monthly means ranged between 0.11% and 0.75%) and low relative fecundity in female fish (between 2 and 44 oocytes/g) are consistent with a need of close proximity between male and female during oocyte fertilization, sexual courtship and with spawning in pairs and/or within reef crevices. The estimated length at 50% maturity (± SD) for females was 15.22 ± 0.43 cm total length. Although P. brasilianus shares the main reproductive features of its congeneric species Pinguipes chilensis , male GSI and female length at 50% maturity in P. brasilianus were markedly lower than those reported for P. chilensis , while relative and batch fecundity were greater in fish of the same size.

The use of morphological and histological features as nutritional condition indices of Pagrus pagrus larvae

Morphometrical and histological techniques were employed to characterize Pagrus pagrus larvae nutritional condition. Larvae were reared in laboratory under controlled conditions with the main objective of testing whether these methodologies allowed finding differences between larvae from different feeding treatments. Once yolk was consumed (three days after hatching) larvae were assigned to a feeding treatment: starved during the whole experiment; delayed feeding, starved during three days; fed during the entire experiment. Algae (Nannochloropsis oculata) and rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) were provided to larvae for feed treatments. Larvae were fixed daily; for morphometrical purposes in 5% formaldehyde solution, and in Bouin for histological sections. Results herein obtained showed that both methodologies are sensitive enough to distinguish larvae characterized by different nutritional condition states obtained from the feeding treatments. Consequently, these methodologies could be employed in wild red porgy larvae in order to asses their nutritional condition. These techniques could also be employed to check larval quality obtained with aquaculture purposes to estimate the effects of changes in rearing protocols or kind of food supply and thus, to guaranty a higher survival of early developmental stages of reared larvae.
