The economic and social importance of the automotive industry explains the need for researching improved ways of organising and managing the diverse processes involved in the production of motor vehicles. Furthermore, the management of supply chains and inter-organisational relations has acquired strategic significance in recent years and has become a key area of research. At the interface between these two fields, this paper adopts a bibliometric viewpoint to analyse the scholarly literature that has addressed the study of supply chains within the specific sphere of the automotive industry. To do so, it has examined the 404 papers on this topic indexed through to 2011 in the Business Source Complete database. This has allowed identifying trends and opportunities related to the what, how and where of research into this matter.

This research addresses the relationship between an organisations assimilation of its environmental management system (EMS), the experience it gains through it, and its environmental performance. Assimilation here refers to the degree to which the requirements of the management standard are integrated within a plants daily operations. Basing ourselves on the heterogeneity of organisations, we argue that assimilation and experience will inform environmental performance. Furthermore, we posit that the relationship between assimilation and environmental performance depends on experience. The attempt to obtain greater assimilation in a shorter time leads an organisation to record a poorer environmental outcome, which we shall refer to as time compression diseconomies in environmental management. We provide empirical evidence based on 154 plants pertaining to firms in Spain subject to the European Unions CO2 Emissions Trading System.

Recent years have seen firms improve their environmental practices, although the question still remains as to whether or not investing in such practices is or is not beneficial or simply a matter of image. This study focuses on labour productivity as a measure of performance, and we argue that the impact of greater environmental performance on that productivity is moderated by capital intensity. A sample of 2823 plants provides empirical evidence to support our approach. Specifically, the analyses, making use of estimates based on multiple regression models, reveal that environmental management has a positive impact on labour productivity in organisations with low capital intensity, although that impact becomes negative in cases of high capital intensity.

Purpose – Prior research into the manufacturing functions contribution to business performance demonstrates two seemingly incompatible approaches: strategic alignment or the identification of best practices. In the former, practices are useful only if they are consistent with the strategy to be implemented; in the latter, better performance derives from certain practices, regardless of the strategic context. The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical framework to integrate these approaches according to two types of manufacturing alignment, external and internal, such that organizational performance depends on their interaction. Design/methodology/approach – The framework was tested over the information provided on a questionnaire by 148 Spanish companies in three industrial sectors: industrial and commercial machinery, electronic and other electrical equipment, and transportation equipment. Findings – The level of internal alignment depends on the manufacturing practices; some facilitate align...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the environmental management of purchases and firm performance. The authors examine the moderating role played by two variables: the establishment of long-term relationships with suppliers and the strategic integration of the purchasing function. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conduct an empirical study on a sample of 100 Portuguese firms. Findings – Evidence reveals that green purchasing management improves the performance of the purchasing function, although the impact is greater when the organisation forges lasting alliances with its suppliers. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the study of the consequences of introducing environmental practices into the purchasing function, especially with regards to the formation of a panel of sustainable suppliers. Specifically, this research provides evidence to show that the implementation of those practices has positive impacts on the operating performance of the pur...

Numerous studies have described the causes of plagiarism within higher education, either by focusing on contextual factors or on individual reasons. Few of these, however, help teaching staff when seeking to reduce or control this plagiarism. This paper analyses a series of factors of voluntary and involuntary plagiarism that may be taken into account in teaching strategies. Furthermore, it provides empirical evidence using data from antiplagiarism software and from a survey involving 92 university students. The study’s main conclusions are that the more straightforward a task is and the less information students have available to them, the less the likelihood of deliberate plagiarism. By contrast, it is shown that the greater students’ instruction regarding the citation system, the lower their propensity to involuntary plagiarism.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) has often been discussed and studied by academics and practitioners over the last two decades. One reason for the growing interest in SCM is that a companys performance is no longer solely determined by the decisions it makes and actions it takes, but also by the contribution and performance of all the members along the supply chain. This study examines the academic literature on SCM. The aim is not to perform an exhaustive analysis. Rather, the goal is to carry out a representative work. This article interconnects two study areas: supply chain management and organizational performance. The analysis was based on 172 academic articles. This study helps to identify opportunities and weaknesses in the field of operations management and helps researchers to find trends that could support future studies in SCM.
