Comparison between refinery processes for heavy oil upgrading: a future fuel demand

Mohan S. Rana; Jorge Ancheyta; S.K. Maity; Gustavo Marroquín

Petroleum refining industry is entering into the significant era of reformation due to the depletion of light petroleum and an increase in heavy or extra heavy crude oil production. There is a strong need to revise the processes that are commercially available for heavy crude oil refining. Upgrading of heavy and extra heavy oil by means of catalytic processes requires new generation catalyst along with several modifications of process conditions. This review focuses on the description of different ways to convert heavy crude oils into synthetic crude oil. Specific illustrative examples of hydroprocessing indicated how such studies may open up new routes in the search of suitable catalyst and process for upgrading heavy petroleum. The Effect of Solvent Washing on Asphaltenes and Their Characterization

Elena Alvarez; Fernando Trejo; Gustavo Marroquín; Jorge Ancheyta

Asphaltenes from an atmospheric residue of heavy crude were precipitated with n-heptane. Part of the isolated asphaltenes was washed under Soxhlet reflux to remove adsorbed maltenes. Comparison among washed and unwashed asphaltenes was carried out and both samples were characterized by atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry.

ABSTRACT The compound 2-ureido-pentanedioic acid was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectra. Its molecular structure was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the title compound, C6H10N2O5, the chiral structure is stabilized by intermolecular O–H···O and N–H···O hydrogen bonds in a supramolecular assembly formed by infinite chains parallel to the bc plane with graph set C(4) connected by amide-acid dimers R22(8) into a three-dimensional network.

A study of copolymers activity during the separation of water-in-oil emulsions

Felipe Sánchez-Minero; Gustavo Marroquín; Juan Ramón Avendaño-Gómez

ABSTRACT The activity of copolymers poly (propylene oxide)-poly (ethylene oxide) (PPO-PEO) with different amount of PEO (10 and 15 wt%) was studied on the separation of water from water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. The results show an increase in the interfacial activity of the copolymer when PEO concentration was 15 wt%. However, the increase in molecular size of the copolymer due to high concentration of PEO may cause problems related to transport through the emulsion. Thus, while the PPO-PEO10 copolymer was more active for the separation of water present in the W/O emulsion of 6.4° API, which is highly viscous, the PPO-PEO15 copolymer was more effective for the W/O emulsion of 7.1° API, which is highly stable.
