The relationships between the spatial and temporal variations in the abundance of the shrimp Nematopalaemon schmitti and water temperature, salinity, and texture and organic-matter content of the sediment, were analysed in Ubatumirim, Ubatuba and Mar Virado bays on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Sampling was carried out monthly, from January 1998 through December 1999, from a shrimp boat equipped with double-rig nets, along six transects in each bay. In total, 2 116 specimens of N. schmitti were caught. Their distribution differed among bays, transects and seasons (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Highest total abundance was found in areas of high organic matter content, in substrate composed mainly of very fine sand and silt and clay, and during winter and autumn. Although multiple regression analysis showed no significant relationship (p > 0.05), observations suggest that water temperature, sediment texture, organic-matter content, and the presence of biodetritus and plant fragments, provided favourable environmental conditions for the establishment of N. schmitti in the region.

[The present study assessed the composition and abundance of species of Anomura at the southeastern coast of Brazil. Sampling was carried out monthly from January 1998 to December 1999, in three regions of Ubatuba: Ubatumirim Bay, Ubatuba Bay and Mar Virado Bay, using a fishing boat equipped with two double-rigged nets. Four transects were defined at depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 meters in each bay. Two additional transects were defined perpendicular to the beach: one in a sheltered area and the other in an area exposed to wave action. A total of 6356 specimens of anomurans representing 15 species and 9 genera of 3 superfamilies (11 Paguroidea, 1 Hippoidea, and 3 Galatheoidea) was recorded. Paguristes robustus was recorded for the first time from the Sao Paulo State coast. Dardanus insignis was the most abundant species, followed by Loxopagurus loxochelis and Porcellana sayana . The high abundance of P. sayana may be related to the presence of D. insignis and Petrochirus diogenes , because this porcellanid crab lives inside the shells occupied by these hermit crabs. Species richness varied among the bays and transects, but the highest values were observed at the exposed and sheltered areas. The highest abundance of anomurans was recorded at a depth of 20 m during winter in the bays Mar Virado and Ubatuba. The anomuran species comprised 75% of the total number previously recorded from coastal non-consolidated bottoms of Sao Paulo. We therefore infer that this region affords favourable biotic and abiotic conditions for the settlement and maintenance of a large number of species of Anomura. , The present study assessed the composition and abundance of species of Anomura at the southeastern coast of Brazil. The population biology of Nematopalaemon schmitti in the Ubatuba region on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo was characterized through analyses of the length-frequency distribution, sex ratio, reproductive period, and juvenile recruitment. The specimens were caught monthly from January 1998 to December 1999, from a shrimp boat equipped with double-rig trawl nets. A total of 1073 specimens were analyzed, and the sex and carapace length (0.1 mm) of each individual were noted. The analyzed specimens consisted of 152 juveniles, 437 adult males, 296 adult females, and 188 ovigerous females (OFs). The monthly distribution of N. schmitti by size classes revealed a stable population structure, with both juveniles and adults continuously present. This population showed a unimodal distribution; however, bimodality was identified in June 1998 and 1999 for males, and June 1998 and July 1998 and 1999 for females, probably related to recruitment pulses of juveniles. Sexual dimorphism was indicated by the presence of females in the larger size classes, probably because of their growth rate. The proportion between males and females differed from 1 : 1 in certain size classes and seasons of the year (χ 2, p < 0.05); in some situations, the females were more abundant than the males, or vice versa. No significant relationship was detected between the seasonal mean temperatures of the bottom water and the percentages of OFs and young, or for the relationship between these two groups (Spearman, p > 0.05). The continuous presence of OFs and young in the population suggests a pattern of continuous reproduction for N. schmitti in the Ubatuba region.

Growth and Mortality Parameters of Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Sciaenidae) Captured as Bycatch in Southeastern of Brazil The present work provides preliminary informations on the growth and mortality of Paralonchurus brasiliensis captured as a bycatch in the inner shelf of Sao Paulo Southeastern Brazil. The samplings were carried out using a shrimp fishery trawl. After trawling, the specimens were separated from the other organisms and the fish size and numbers of individuals captured were recorded. A total of 5,943 specimens ranging from 3.6 to 19.9 cm in standard length were sampled.
