A novel planar monopole antenna is proposed. It has a very low profile (antenna height less than 0.04 times the operating wavelength in free space) and is capable of multiband operation. The proposed antenna has a planar rectangular radiating patch in which a folded slit is inserted at the patchs bottom edge. The folded slit separates the rectangular patch into two subpatches, one smaller inner subpatch encircled by the larger outer one. The proposed antenna is then operated with the inner subpatch resonating as a quarter-wavelength structure and the outer one resonating as both a quarter-wavelength and a half-wavelength structure. The proposed antenna, 12 mm high and 30 mm wide, has been constructed, and the obtained bandwidths cover the global system for mobile communication (890-960 MHz), digital communication system (1710-1880 MHz), personal communication system (1850-1990 MHz), and universal mobile telecommunication system (1920-2170 MHz) bands. Details of the proposed design and obtained experimental results are presented and discussed.

Two designs of stacked shorted patch antennas with a low profile (antenna height less than 5 mm) and a wide bandwidth (larger than 10%) suitable for applications for GSM 1800 and GSM 900 cellular systems, respectively, are presented. In the designs, the upper and lower shorted patches have a common shorting wall, and are both printed on a dielectric substrate. Wide impedance bandwidth is obtained by adjusting the lengths of the upper and lower patches to be slightly different, leading to the excitation of two closely excited resonant modes. The experimental results are presented and discussed.

Introduction Low-profile planar monopole antennas capable of 900 and 1800 MHz dual-frequency operations are very attractive for GSM/DCS mobile phone applications. Many related promising designs have also been demonstrated recently [ 11-[5]. These designs include modifying the geometry of a bent folded monopoleAoop antenna [l], folding a meandered printed strip [2], using two [3], [4] or three [5] meandered printed strips, and so on. In this paper, we propose another promising planar monopole antenna design with a very low antenna height less than 0.04& (the total antenna height is only 12 mm for operating in the 900-MHz band). In addition, the proposed antenna is capable of triple-band operation, covering the GSM, DCS and PCS bands. The proposed design is described in detail in this paper, and experimental results of the constructed prototype are presented.

In this paper, we present a novel plastic chip antenna, which requires no isolation distance to the ground plane, making the antenna having a lower antenna height above the ground plane of the system circuit board. In addition, with a compact size of 33/spl times/7.5/spl times/7.5 mm, the proposed antenna generates two separate wide resonant modes covering the GSM and DCS bands. Details of the proposed antenna are described, and the experimental results of a constructed prototype are presented.
