Chapter divisions, capitula lists, and the Old Latin versions of John

H. A. G. Houghton

A thorough investigation of the sets of chapter titles (capitula) found in Latin Gospel manuscripts shows that many derive from Old Latin versions which predate the Vulgate. This study surveys the material gathered by De Bruyne in Sommaires, divisions et rubriques de la Bible latine (1914), with supplements and corrections. The first part describes systems of dividing the Gospel in manuscripts with an Old Latin affiliation in John. The second part analyses each of the fifteen series of capitula, providing details of their manuscript attestation, interrelationship and biblical text. An Appendix provides a table of chapter divisions for each set of capitula and the Old Latin manuscripts of John.

The Gospel according to Mark in two Latin Mixed-text Manuscripts

H. A. G. Houghton

Two late eighth-century Latin gospel books have recently been identified as witnesses to the pre-Vulgate text of the Gospel according to John. In this article, their text of Mark is analysed and shown also to contain significant Old Latin material notwithstanding their general affiliation to the Vulgate. VL 11A (Wurzburg, Universitatsbibliothek M.p.th.f. 67) has an unaltered Old Latin portion between Mark 10:30 and 11:5 and earlier readings throughout the manuscript. There are a number of unique or poorly-attested variants, including de publico in 7:4 and cum omni sollicitudine in Mark 14:44 which may give some clues about the origin of the text. VL 9A (St Petersburg, National Library of Russia F.v.I.8) has a mixed text with a significant proportion of Old Latin readings in Mark 10-14. Some of these are only paralleled by VL 1 (Codex Bobiensis) and represent a very early Latin version. In certain introductions to direct speech, this is the only Latin witness which corresponds to the earliest Greek form of...

Augustine's Adoption of the Vulgate Gospels

H. A. G. Houghton

This paper examines Augustines text of the Gospel according to John to trace the process by which he adopted Jeromes revision of the Gospels. An important feature is the distinction between ‘primary citations’ taken from a codex and ‘secondary citations’ likely to have been made from memory, which change affiliation at different rates. Augustines progress from Old Latin to Vulgate text-types is illustrated by the comparison of selected passages with surviving manuscripts. Textual variants in these citations suggest that Augustines biblical text has been transmitted accurately.
