Antiferromagnetism in chromium alloy single crystals

H. Bjerrum Møller; A.L. Trego; A.R. Makintosh

Abstract The antiferromagnetism of single crystals of dilute alloys of V, Mn and Re in Cr has been studied at 95°K and 300°K by neutron diffraction. The addition of V causes the diffraction peaks to decrease in intensity and move away from (100), while Mn and Re cause them to increase and approach (100) so that, above a certain concentration, the oscillatory magnetization becomes commensurate with the lattice. The resistivity and thermoelectric power have also been studied as a function of temperature between 4.2°K and 450°K. Pronounced anomalies were observed in the transport properties just below the Neel temperatute, and these are interpreted in terms of the magnitude and position of the magnetic superzone energy gaps and the change in magnetic disorder scattering.

MAGNETIC SCATTERING OF NEUTRONS IN CHROMIUM

H. Bjerrum Møller; K. Blinowski; A.R. Mackintosh; T. Brun

Abstract The results of a study of the magnetic scattering of neutrons in chromium near the Neel temperature are presented. It is deduced from these results that short range ordering persists in chromium unusually high above the Neel temperature, and that the magnetic structure below the Neel temperature can exhibit lower than cubic symmetry.

Rare earth solutes and the magnetic properties of terbium

Larsen Cc; A.R. Mackintosh; H. Bjerrum Møller; S. Legvold; B. J. Beaudry

Abstract The influence of 10% of the rare earth elements Dy, Tm, Y and Pr on the magnetic properties of Tb has been investigated by magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. The magnetic phase diagram for these alloys, and magnon dispersion relations in the helical ferromagnetic phases are presented.

Excitations of Neodymium Ions in Praseodymium

M. Wulff; Jens Oluf Jensen; A.R. Mackintosh; H. Bjerrum Møller; O.D. McMasters; K. A. Gschneidner

Abstract The excitations of Nd ions dissolved in Pr have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. A crystal-field level at about 1.2 meV interferes strongly with the host excitations. In the antiferromagnetic phase, another level is observed about 0.5 meV above the ground-state, which is split by the molecular field.
