High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission study of CeSb and USb

Abstract High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HR-ARPES) has been performed on isostructural CeSb and USb to study the electronic structure near the Fermi level (E F ). In CeSb, we observed the hole and electron pockets at the Brillouin-zone (BZ) center and boundary, respectively, as well as the systematic change of the volume upon the temperature-dependent magnetic phase transition ( T N =16xa0K). The experimental result suggests that the p–f mixing plays an essential role in characterizing the magnetic property of semimetallic CeSb. In USb, on the other hand, we found a large electron pocket at the BZ center consisting of U 6d states and two almost dispersionless U 5f bands just below E F . This illustrates a clear difference in the electronic structure between Ce and U monopnictides as well as the character between 4f and 5f electrons.

Surface and bulk 4f electronic structure of CeIn3 and CeSn3

Abstract Resonant photoemission spectroscopy was performed on CeIn3 and CeSn3 at the 4d–4f and 3d–4f core thresholds. Using the different surface sensitivity between the two photon energies, surface and bulk 4f-photoemission spectra were derived for both compounds. We analyzed the surface and bulk spectra using the noncrossing approximation of the Anderson impurity model to obtain the microscopic physical parameters.
