Summary A case is reported of marked adrenal and pituitary hypoplasia in a 4-day-old infant. The pituitary showed an absence of acidophils, a decrease in PAS-positive material, and a relative increase in anterior lobe basophils. The adrenals were quite minute. The adrenal lipids histologically appeared normal or increased in amount. The significance of these findings is discussed. The twin sibling died at 2 days of age and the autopsy was performed elsewhere. Marked adrenal hypoplasia was found.

The protein binding of iodide-I/sup 131/ in vitro reported by some investigators has been attributed recently to an irradiation-induced change in the serum proteins. In the present study, human serum was irradiated with iodideI/sup 131/ alone or with both I/sup 131/ and Co/sup 60/ in vitro. No binding of I/sup 131/ to serum protein was observed after 3-hr electrophoresis of the samples. It is concluded that irradiation of the serum does not enhance in vitro binding of iodide. (auth)
