L-(S)-erythrulose a novel precursor to L-2,3-O-isopropylidene-C3 chirons

Abstract Starting from L-(S)-erythrulose, now available in larger quantities, the preparation of L-(S)-glyceraldehyde, L-(R)-glycerol and L-(S)-methyl glycerate acetonides, via the protected L-(S)-3,4-O-isopropylideneerythrulose, is described.

L-(S)-Erythrulose: The synthesis of (R)-1,2,4-butanetriol and of some related C4 chirons.

Abstract L-(S)-Erythrulose can easily be transformed into (R)-1,2,4-butanetriol and related C 4 , chiral building blocks. A formal synthesis of (-)GABOB is presented. Also the formation of 3-methylene-1,2,4-butanetriol derivatives is described.

Sesquiterpene lactones : A total synthesis of (±)-vernolepin

Abstract A novel synthesis of (± )-Vernolepin ( 1 ) is described. A suitably substituted cis -fused 2-oxa-3-decalone precursor ( 29 ) has been constructed starting from 2,5-cyclohexadiene carboxylic acid via an intramolecular cyclopropanation reaction ( 23 to 18 ). The route culminated in the synthesis of Griecos lactone ( 53 ) which has previously been converted to (± )-vernolepin ( 1 ) and (± )-vernomenin ( 2 ).
