A preliminary investigation into the correlation between teaching and research in the Florida State university system

H. Eugene Baker; Homer L. Bates; J. Victoria Garbacik‐Kopman; John McEldowney

Investigates the controversy surrounding the issue of empirical research productivity and quality teaching and whether or not they enhance each other or represent a trade‐off. Focuses on recent developments in Florida, where monetary incentives were provided to reward excellent teaching – the Teaching Incentive Programme (TIP). Reviews literature in the field of teaching effectiveness and research productivity. Sets out to test the results from previous studies (which found very little correlation between research productivity and teaching effectiveness) by identifying the recipients of Florida’s TIP awards, matching them with non‐recipients at the same university, gathering information on the publication record of each individual, and using sign tests to compare the recipients and non‐recipients of the TIP award. Finds that there was little significant difference in the publication records of recipients and non‐recipients. Concludes, therefore, that quality teaching and research are not mutually exclusive.

Limitations in “Realistic Recruiting” and Subsequent Socialization Efforts: The Case of Riddick Bowe and the United States Marine Corps

H. Eugene Baker; Kenneth M. Jennings

There can be no doubt that matching the needs of the organization to the expectations of new employees is a critical factor influencing the quality and effectiveness of the long-term employment relationship. Riddick Bowes failed entry into an organization that has prided itself on its ability to communicate expectations, and the nature of the socialization process that the recruit will encounter, demonstrates what can happen when an organization varies from a successful recruitment/selection process. This paper begins by summarizing some of the important facets of organizational recruitment/selection and subsequent socialization tactics. Bowes early departure from recruit training is detailed, identifying specific errors made by the Marine Corps relating to their established approach to realistic recruiting and socialization. Finally, implications for action by other organizations are discussed in the form of lessons to be learned.

An Empirical Typology of Approaches to the Teaching of Organization Theory

Steven K. Paulson; H. Eugene Baker

Abstract As an academic discipline, organization theory is relatively young. Most of the founding work was done in this century and much of it since 1945. The research reported in this article was aimed at further identification of the field. Questionnaire responses given by 272 college teachers of organization theory were analyzed. Two very different approaches to the teaching of organization theory were discovered. One approach, labeled “Topics in Organizational Management,” was identified among 152 of the respondents and covers a wide range of topics with a generalized focus on organizational related issues for management. The other approach, labeled “Organizational Structure and Design,” was identified among 109 of the respondents and covers fewer topics with a narrower focus on the relationship between contingency factors and structural design alternatives. Teaching styles of the two approaches also differed and are discussed along with suggestions for development of the organization theory course in...
