Abstract We present cross sections for coherent and non-coherent production of one, two and three pions in pd reactions at 19 GeV/ c . The mass distributions of the two pion non-coherent channels are studied. Strong single Δ(1236) and also some double Δ production is observed. Clear evidence for ϱ production is seen.

Charged-particle multiplicity distributions and rescattering effects in pd interactions at 19 GeV/c

SummaryInelastic topological pd cross-sections at 19 GeV/c have been determined from an exposure of the CERN 2 m bubble chamber. The total cross-section for three or more prongs was measured to be (42.4±0.3) mb. The pn charge multiplicity distribution was determined from the data by taking into account rescattering, which was found to constitute (18.5±1.5)% of the above cross-section. The average pn charge multiplicity 〈nc〉 and the average over the dispersion, 〈nc〉/D were found to be 3.53±0.12 and 1.88±0.06, respectively. This latter value indicates by comparison with results at high energies that the pn multiplicity distribution fulfills KNO scaling earlier than the corresponding pp distribution. It is found that available pn data in the energy range (12÷300) GeV fit the modified KNO scaling function of Buraset al. if a value of α of 0.39 is used.RiassuntoSi sono determinate sezioni durto topologiche inelastiche per le interazioni pd a 19 GeV/c da unesposizione nella camera a bolle di 2 m del CERN. Si è determinata la distribuzione di molteplicità di carica di pn dai dati prendendo in considerazione il rescattering, che costituisce il (18.5±1.5)% della sezione durto sopranominata. La molteplicità di carica media 〈nc〉 e la media sulla dispersione 〈nc〉/D sono state valutate 3.53±0.12 e 1.88±0.06, rispettivamente. Questultimo valore indica per mezzo del confronto a energie più alte che la distribuzione di molteplicità di pn soddisfa la variazione di scala di KNO prima della corrispondente distribuzione di pp. Si è trovato che i dati disponibili di pn nellintervallo di energia (12÷300) GeV si adattano alla funzione di variazione di scala di KNO modificata di Buraset al., se si usa un valore di α uguale a 0.39.РезюмеОпределяются неупругие топологические pd поперечные сечения при 19 ГэВ/с на 2м пузырьковой камере в ЦЕРНе. Измерено, что полное поперечное сечение для событий с тремя или более лучами составляет (42.4±0.3) мб. Из полученных данных определяется распределение множественности зараженных частиц, учитывая перерассеяние, которое составляет (18.5±1.5)% поперечного сечения. Определено, что средняя множественность заряженных частиц, 〈nc〉, и средняя дисперсия, 〈nc〉/D, составляют соответственно 3.53±0.12 и 1.88±0.06. Последняя величина указывает, что распределение рн множественности подчиняется КИО скейлингу реньше, чем соответствующее pp распределение. Получено, что имеющиеся pn данные в области энергий (12÷300) ГэВ соответствуют модифицированной функции КНО скейлинга, предложенной Бурашом и др., если используется величина α, равная 0.39.
